Maria Montessori was well-known physician and educator who was born in Italy in 1870.

Life detours

She was to have become a doctor and tried to enroll in medical school but the principal rejected her. Maria decided that she would become a physics, math and natural science teacher.. But she knew she was going to be a doctor. In 1896 she became one of the first female doctors in Italy. Some years later, she organized the orthophrenic school, where she would apply new teaching strategies were children learned in a different environment with a special materials designed for them.

To Maria, this experience at the orthophenic school was important for being open-minded to a life-changing transitions from being a medical doctor to become an educator. From the beginning, she was cutted out for teaching! Maria was about to pass away when she attended at the 9th international Montessori congress 1951.
