Cognative Load Theory

What is it all about?

Question

What do we already do to reduce cognative load in class?

Cognative Load Theory

Why is cognative load theory important to consider? What do we need to be cautious of? What types of memory are there? How do they differ / why do we need to be ware of them?

What are we taking away from this?WHat will you do differently?

Schema

Features of a Schema

To understand more about Schemas we think about them being a list of connections between pieces of learning that we have learnt. There are a few core features of a schema. Here is a worked example using cars as the theme.

Make a Schema

10 mins

Choose a subject/lesson theme that interests you. E.g. Football.

Can you create a scheme to show how the various bits of learning you have done come together to make connections and build a schema.

For this part of the INSET I would like you to think about what this approach would look like in a lesson. We will discuss what each section of our plan will look like through discussion ensuring that all components are covered.

Pm Lesson Study Planning

You will be working this afternoon in your Key Stages (KS2 and KS1/EYFS) You are going to be tasked with planning a lesson for one onf your classes/year groups. You can choose what the lesson is and what the focus is, but you will be asked to plan it using our new 4 component process, showcasing the work we have done on pedagogy. This is to be a detailed plan, showing timings on it too. You will then teach, one or even all of you, whilst the others observe the learning (not teaching) and feedback to the rest of the group, then to all teachers.

1. Plan the lesson using the format on Teams 2.Diarise who and when it is being taught 3. Devise How will you review the learning at each stage (not the teaching)

Review

So how did you all get on today? Our school pedgoagy is that lessons are built around four componets and at each of those componets there are 3 different techniques to consider, based around the work we have been looking at today. This is all backed up by educational research and best practise. You now have the opportunity to go back and try this in your class to see how it goes, before feeding back in staff meeting time. This not about: - Rewriting all planning and starting from scratch, you will do some of this already - Changing everything we believe and think It is about more careful consideration to the process of planning to get the best out of the children. We need to consider how we become more effective teachers and subsequently how we develop more effective learners.
