What is trauma?
Trauma is a response to a deeply distressing or disturbing event that overwhelms an individual's ability to cope.
Types of trauma
cOMPLEX
aCUTE
cHRONIC
Repeated or prolonged exposure typically in childhood or early adulthood
- Childhood abuse
- Kidnapping
- Accident
- Bullying
Results from a single, distressing event
- Car accident
- Sudden loss of a loved one
- Natural disaster
- Physical abuse
Prolonged or repeated exposure to distressing events
- Sexual abuse
- Neglect
- Combat experiences
- Chronic illness
Approximately 25% of American children will experience at least 1 traumatic event by the age of 16

The brain perceives threats and activates FIGHT, FLIGHT, or FREEZE
Amygdala: Processes fear and emotional memories.
Hippocampus: Manages memory and distinguishes between past and present.
Prefrontal Cortex: Regulates emotions and decision-making.
