Tokyo
Tokyo is located in Japan and is also the capital of Japan. Tokyo is the most populated place in the world with a population of over 37 million.
Change over time
Tokyo's population first skyrocketed in 1868 after the Meiji Restoration. The population dropped for the first time in 2021 since 1996. The population has continued declining since 2008 and is projected to decrease by 63 million in 2100 however the city has seen in increase in people moving to the city.
Sustainable?
Surprisingly, Tokyo IS considered to be a sustainable city. They are determined to reduce emissions, promote renewable energy, and are aiming for a net-zero carbon footprint by 2050. Tokyo has reserved green spaces in urban areas and has a fantastic transportation system. They also have advanced waste management procedures and high recycling rates. Tokyo's current net carbon footprint is mostly created by commercial activities, this makes up for about 37.4% of the city's total emissions, the residential sector at 30% and transportation at 17%.
