Important Facts about intellectual Disabilities

Prior to intellectual disability being renamed, the term used was “mental retardation”, which is no longer the correct term and further marginalized this community. The category’s name was changed under the Obama administration. The name of the category was officially changed to intellectual disability in the United States by the passing of Rosa’s law in 2010. President Barack Obama officially signed the law into effect on October 5th of 2010.

In the DSM-5, there are terms to discuss the rage of severity for intellectual disabilities. The terms to describe severity are as follows, mild,” “moderate,” “severe,” and “profound”. These categories of severity can be helpful when making plans in order to best educate a child with an intellectual disability. These terms also help to understand more about the impact that the disability has on the functioning of the individual and focuses on the skills of daily living rather than just an IQ number.
