Secondo la definizione tradizionale, corpo celeste che brilla di luce propria, perché costituito di materia incandescente, a differenza di un pianeta che si limita a riflettere la luce ricevuta dal Sole o da un’altra stella.

Le s., anche se osservate con i più potenti telescopi, a causa della loro enorme distanza ci appaiono come puntiformi. A occhio nudo se ne riescono a distinguere non più di 6000 (quelle la cui magnitudine apparente è minore di 6). Le s. più luminose sono designate con nomi propri, come, per es., Arturo, Altair, Vega ecc.; alcune di queste s. sono, in realtà, doppie, sicché vengono distinte con le lettere A, B: per es., Sirio A e Sirio B, Procione A e Procione B ecc.

I sistemi di stelle

Esistono anche i Sistemi di stelle, doppi o multipli. Le stelle a volte “si inseguono” attorno allo stesso centro di rotazione, e a volte i componenti del sistema si riconoscono al telescopio mentre a volte si riconoscono solo dalle diverse luminosità.

Da sempre, l'uomo si orienta guardando le stelle. Ma non è il solo a farlo: gli scarabei stercorari, quando si spostano di notte, prendono come riferimento la Via Lattea. Lo ha scoperto il biologo svedese Lund Eric Warrant, secondo il quale si tratterebbe del primo caso finora osservato in natura.

Lo Zodiaco comprende le 12 costellazioni che si trovano lungo l'Eclittica, il percorso apparente del Sole sulla sfera celeste, e che rappresentano quasi tutte animali (o comunque esseri viventi). Da qui il suo nome: in greco antico, zodiakòs significa “strada degli animali”.

Le galassie sono enormi insiemi di stelle e di gigantesche nubi di gas e polvere. Esse sono i "mattoni" che compongono l'universo, il quale ne contiene miliardi. Una galassia costituisce anch'essa, in piccolo, un vero e proprio universo a sè stante: è un sistema autogravitante, che generalmente si evolve separatamente dalle altre galassie.

Classificazione delle galassie

Le galassie hanno forme e caratteristiche diverse e vengono classificate in tre grandi categorie: le galassie a spirale, quelle ellittiche e quelle irregolari. -Le galassie spirali hanno la forma di un disco, in rotazione attorno al proprio asse, con delle braccia a spirale che si dipartono da un nucleo centrale e lo avvolgono; sono ricche di gas e le braccia contengono stelle giovani, mentre il nucleo contiene stelle più vecchie. -Le galassie ellittiche hanno la forma di un ellissoide più o meno schiacciato, sono molto povere di gas e possiedono quasi solo stelle vecchie. In questo tipo di galassie non si formano più stelle, non essendoci più gas disponibile. -Le galassie irregolari hanno una forma non ben definita, sono ricche di gas, polvere e stelle giovani. In questo tipo di galassie la formazione di stelle è molto intensa.

Gli ammassi di galassie

Tutte le strutture dell'universo mostrano una tendenza a raggruparsi seguendo una gerarchia: i pianeti in un sistema planetario, le stelle in ammassi, gli ammassi in galassie. Allo stesso modo, anche le galassie tendono ad unirsi in gruppi di qualche decina di membri; a loro volta, più gruppi si riuniscono in ammassi di galassie, i quali, insieme ad altri ammassi, formano superammassi.

Fa parte di una struttura galattica ancora più grande

La nostra Galassia fa parte del Gruppo Locale, uno dei gruppi di galassie più poveri; due sole galassie dominano il Gruppo Locale, la nostra e M31 (la galassia di Andromeda), che insieme costituiscono circa l'80% della massa del sistema. Le altre galassie sono più piccole, come la spirale M33, o addirittura satelliti delle più grandi; per esempio, la Piccola e la Grande Nube di Magellano sono due piccole galassie satelliti della nostra, che si trovano a circa 180.000 anni luce da noi. Il Gruppo Locale ha un diametro di circa 5-6 milioni di anni luce.

È in continuo movimento

La nostra galassia si muove costantemente nello spazio, così come tutti gli altri oggetti dell’Universo. La Terra si muove intorno al Sole, il Sole si muove intorno alla Via Lattea, e la Via Lattea si muove all’interno del Gruppo Locale che a sua volta si muove ad una velocità di circa 2,2 milioni km/h.

Ha oltre 200 miliardi di stelle

Tra tutte le galassie conosciute, la nostra Via Lattea ha un numero complessivo di stelle che la colloca in una posizione intermedia. La galassia più grande che conosciamo, IC 1101, ha un diametro di circa 6 milioni di anni luce, vale a dire circa 76 volte quello della Via Lattea, e possiede un numero di stelle intorno ai 100.000 miliardi. Le galassie nane, come la Grande Nube di Magellano, hanno invece circa 10 miliardi di stelle. Nella nostra galassia vi sono tra 200 e 400 miliardi di stelle. Il numero di stelle presenti nella galassia non è fisso, naturalmente, ma è in continua variazione per via delle stelle che si spengono e di quelle nuove che nascono (una media di 7 all’anno).

STELLE VISIBILI

Le stelle visibili a occhio nudo sono state classificate nel II secolo a.C. dall’astronomo greco Ipparco, che le suddivise secondo la luminosità: un sistema in uso ancora oggi. Sono circa seimila in tutto ma, a causa dell'inquinamento luminoso, dalle nostre città se ne vedono appena 240.

COSTELLAZIONI

Le costellazioni sono gruppi di stelle che sembrano formare delle figure geometriche nel cielo: l'Unione Astronomica Internazionale ne riconosce 88. È un sistema utile per distinguerle, ma è solo una convenzione: astri che a noi sembrano vicini spesso sono a enorme distanza fra loro.

FALSE STELLE

Anche se le chiamiamo stelle, le comete sono in realtà enormi blocchi di ghiaccio e polveri che viaggiano nello spazio. Vengono dalla Nube di Oort, ai confini del Sistema Solare, e ogni tanto passano davanti al Sole. Allora il materiale di cui sono fatte evapora e diventano visibili nel cielo.
