The In's and Out's

The battles will occur in different habitats like tidal glaciers and woodland savannahs.

  • The Field of Battle in the first 3 rounds is determined by the fighter's seed. The lower seed (i.e., 1-8) will have a "home habitat advantage," meaning the battle will take place in their home habitat, giving them a bit of an edge on the competition.
  • For the last 3 rounds, the battle location is randomized among 4 possible habitats making it anyone's game.

But wait! You want to make sure that you win the whole tournament. You can also use this time to research the species in the tournament to determine how you want to fill out your bracket. Your bracket will be housed in Classkick so make sure you keep it handy to check how it's doing after the battles. If you unfortunately don't make it past round 2, I have good news for you. There is a second chance bracket that you can fill out! Just because you didn't choose right the first time doesn't mean you can't learn from your mistakes and try again. The second chance bracket will consist of all the animals left in the tournament during the Sweet Sixteen round and beyond. Once that bracket is released, I will share it with anyone who wants a second chance. If you're feeling creative, you can send me any artwork you make to send into the tournament. They display art at the end of each video, maybe we'll see yours!

What do I Have to do?

On March 6th, during our live class time, you will have time dedicated to researching your chosen animal. Just like you might have a favorite team that you hope will win championships, you'll need a favorite animal! Out of the 65 species in the bracket, you will choose 1 to focus on and research. Get creative with your research! You can make a skit, a PowerPoint presentation, or a poster explaining why your animal is the best and is definitely going to win Mammal Madness this year. If your animal happens to win the whole tournament, I will send you a little something something for your success!

What is it?

Mammal Madness is a scientific competition that simulates hypothetical battles between critters. It is inspired by March Madness where you will create a bracket and choose who the ultimate winner of the animal kingdom will be.

The battles are determined through scientific research and also a random number generator. There will be videos sent out on battle days. We'll watch these battles either at the beginning or end of class the day they come out. You'll need to have your bracket pulled up to see if you're still in the race!

How Does it Work?

65 species have been selected and ranked by seed number.

  • Ranked 1-16 (1-best, 16-worst)
  • 2 wild card speices at the start

First time filling out a bracket? Want to try to go about this "scientifically"? Watch this video to help you learn the best strategy to fill out a bracket. Keep in mind this is about helping people fill out brackets for the "real" March Madness and the variables are different. It's still worth a shot! See what I did there? You could always be like Dylan and choose animals based on how cute they are, it might work...
