Alors, j'ai pris conscience de mon odorat et ma grande sensibilité aux odeurs. Depuis, j'ai pris la même habitiude mais seulement avec les fleurs et le feuillage des plantes.

Cours de sexualité en CM2. La professeure faisait passer un stérilet pour que chaque élève découvre l'objet de contraception. Après une rapide inspection, je le passe à ma voisine. Elle porte directement à son nez cette chose bizarre, de nature morte. J'étais très étonné et lui demande pourquoi elle sent le stérilet. Elle m'explique que tout ce qu'elle découvre, elle le sent d'abord, comme un réflexe qui vient de loin... attitude animale. Alors, j'ai pris conscience de mon odorat, que j'étais très sensible aux odeurs. Depuis, j'ai pris la même habitude mais seulement avec les fleurs et le feuillage des plantes.

Comment ai-je pris conscience de l'importance de l'odorat ?

Une de mes premières expériences olfactives significatives concernait le parfum de la fleur du Clivia. Une amie et moi nous débattions à coup de "oui-non"sur la réalité de ce parfum. Nous sommes entrés chez une fleuriste pour vérifier. Même la fleuriste ne percevait pas non plus le parfum, alors que je le sentais. J'ai du en resté à cette bataille perdue 2 contre 1.

Linaire à feuille de thym

Sur les dunes landaises, je trouvai la linaire dont j'ignorai l'existance. Au ras du sol, cette jolie fleur jaune vif avait capté mon regard. Je me suis agenouillé pour en découvrir le parfum qui est outagieusement délicat, quoique prononcé, avec des effluves de citron, à l'image de sa couleur. Aucun site sur Internet ne le mentionne. C'est une plante protégée.

Il m'a fallu du temps pour percevoir ses effluves d'étrons pour n'en rien percevoir de répulsif. En clair, j'en étais arrivé comme les parents à n'être plus dérangé par ces nuisances olfactives. Au bout de quelques années, j'ai arrêté cette démarche car ça pue un point c'est tout.

Mon odorat m'a depuis amené vers les sources de bonnes senteurs dont celles de fleurs, même si certaines sont répulsives. Mais dans la vie, il y a aussi les puanteurs, ou du moins ces choses qu'on appelle "odeur" au lieu de parfum. Tout le monde fait l'expérience des odeurs de merde, personne n'y échappe. L'image des mères qui changent les couches de leurs bébés sans en être affectées me troublaient. Je me disais: "ça pue, y'a pas d'autres mots". Mais je me suis ravisé car finalement si l'on s'accomode de l'odeur de ses propres déjections, pourquoi être écoeuré ou gêné par l'odeur de celles des autres, quand, par exemple, on passe derrière eux aux wc ?

En 2021, j'avais lu coup sur coup dans des magazines de jardinage deux articles concernant les cyclamens. Mais aucun des deux n'évoquaient le parfum esquis des fleurs.

J'ai du patienter un an avant de recevoir ce cadeau du fait du cycle des cultures. Avant le terme de l'année, j'avais avancé un prétexte pour les rappeler à mon souvenir. La responsable ne m'avait pas oublié. Ce cyclamen sent effectivement divinement bon!

Alors, j'ai écrit au magazine en question, ainsi qu'à l'entreprise horticole spécialisée dans la culture de cyclamen. Pas de réponse du magazine. Par contre l'entreprise Morel, située dans le sud de la France m'a proposé de m'adresser un cyclamen parfumé qui allait être commercialisé pour la 1ère fois. C'était le Cyclamen 'Absolu'.

Iris Pallida est l'une des matières premières les plus chères de la palette du parfumeur. Le temps nécessaire à son exploitation et le faible rendement de l’extraction fait de l’absolu d’iris une des matières première les plus chères du marché. Le kilo peut atteindre 100 000 €. Un prix qui positionne cette matière loin devant loin le jasmin et le oud, matières nobles de la parfumerie fine. Obtenir sa précieuse absolue nécessite cinq à six ans de patience après sa plantation. J'ai coupé en morceaux des rhizomes et ils ont séché pendant 3 ans: ce parfum naturel a la propriété de m'apporter calme et sérénité.

On définit cette note comme subtilement boisée, sèche, un peu pastel, violette et aérienne. Contrairement à d'autres matières parfumées, l'odeur d'iris se renforce avec le temps.

L'Iris pallida a depuis très longtemps été utilisé en parfumerie. Le mot parfum viendrait de l'expression « per fume » qui signifie « par la fumée », probablement à la suite des usages traditionnels et anciens de fumigations sacrées, médicinales ou rituelles (par exemple d'encens ou de différentes substances végétales).

Pendant une période, j'ai imaginé des flacons de parfum en terre crue que je voulais faire réaliser par le maitre verrier de Brantôme. Le souhait est resté à l'état de rêve.

Tous les ans, je fais de l'eau de rose obtenue par infusion.

Il avait été question que je donne des cours au lycée agricole près de Périgueux en échange d'un coup de mains des élèves de BTS pour la replantation. Pour faciliter la pédagogie, j'avais rempoté un rosier dans un grand pot pour l'emmener en cours. L'échec de mon entreprise m'a laissé ce rosier qui refleurit tous les ans. J'avais fait 300 boutures mais trop tardivement pour qu'elles s'enracinent.

J'ai eu l'opportunité de rencontrer une productrice de roses de Damas et Centifolia près de Bergerac. Elle vendait son terrain agricole et les rosiers. Je ne pouvais acheter que les rosiers. Il fallait les arracher et les replanter dans un nouveau terrain. La quête a été très difficile et au final, j'ai du abandonner l'idée par manque de terrain.

Lors d'une visite des caves de Doué-La-Fontaine pendant les Journées de la Rose, j'ai été sollicité pour être le président du jury de l'année suivante. J'en étais fier et du être patient... un an d'attente !
