Conceito de crescimento económico e desenvolvimento

O crescimento económico pode ser definido como sendo o aumento sustentado de uma unidade económica durante um ou vários períodos longos. A sua avaliação faz-se através da análise de certos índices: Produto Interno Bruto (PIB) ou Produto Nacional Bruto (PNB). O termo crescimento distingue-se de desenvolvimento por significar um aumento quantitativo da produção, cujas consequências serão o enriquecimento da nação e a elevação do nível de vida, mas sem a preocupação da melhoria das condições de vida da sociedade. No que concerne ao Índice de Desenvolvimento Humano (IDH), os dados mais recentes disponíveis são de 2022, ano em que Portugal obteve um IDH de 0,874, mantendo-se na 42.ª posição a nível mundial.
