What is design thinking?
Design thinking is an iterative and non-linear process that contains five phases: 1. Empathize, 2. Define, 3. Ideate, 4. Prototype and 5. Test.

Step 1
Empathy
Empathy is one of the most important elements in both design thinking and the wider area of human-centered design. Empathy is our ability to see the world through other people's eyes — to see what they see, feel what they feel and experience things as they do
Simple Example
Folded Dish Sponge is a 2014 Red Dot Awards winner designed by Yoon Naera. It has a dedicated scrub slot integrated to the spongy middle, so that you can have squeaky-clean dishes.
- If you have never experienced washing the dishes the way that your users do, There is no chance to come up with a creative solution.

Step 2
Define
Gather the findings and generate themes and patterns. By the end of the define phase, you will have a clear problem statement which will guide you throughout the design process. This will form the basis of your ideas and potential solutions.
Simple Example
Categorizing the data that has been collected in empathy phase: User Activities Tasks User Stories
Step 3
Ideate
The ideation phase is a judgement-free zone where the group is encouraged to venture away from the norm, to explore new angles, and to think outside the box. You’ll hold ideation sessions in order to generate as many ideas as possible—regardless of whether or not they’re feasible!
Simple Example
Ideation Phase: Group Ideation Grouping the ideas Narrow down the ideas
Step 4
Prototype
A prototype is essentially a scaled-down version of a product or feature. The aim of the prototyping stage is to turn your ideas into something tangible which can be tested on real users. This ensures that the final design actually solves the user’s problem and is a delight to use!
Simple Example
Prototyping mobile application pages Testing the prototype with actual users to figure out the problems

Step 5
Test
Observe your target users—or representative users—as they interact with your prototype. You’ll also gather feedback on how your users felt throughout the process. The results of the testing phase will often require you to revisit the empathize stage or run through a few more ideation sessions.
Simple Example
Testing the prototype of bike rental app Observing what user is struggling with and what is challenging and hard.
