Guided Inquiry Design

Developed by Barbara K. Stripling, 2003

Developed by Mike Eisenberg and Bob Berkowitz (1987)

Developed by Carol C. Kuhlthau, 2007

What is the purpose?

To further information literacy, and allow students to connect the work and knowledge they are learning in school to the outside world (Third Space), and to then be able to apply that knowledge appropriately

To take the information seeking/problem solving process, and define it into 6 steps, that are easy to remember, for effective problem solving in school, work, or any area of life

To break down the inquiry process into an easy graphic representation, that can be remembered and applied across school curriculums and into real life.

Stripling Model- Stages:

The are 6 unique steps in the Stripling model of Inquiry: Connect, Wonder, Investigate, Construct, Express and Reflect. When using the Stripling model, lessons are typically broken down to focus on 1-3 of the steps, allowing students time to focus on them individually, and grasp a deeper context. The steps are not linear, and often times, can be revisited throughout the process as more information is learned.

The Big Six-Stages :

Just at the Name suggests there are 6 steps in the Big Six Inquiry Model: 1: Task Definition: Students Deine the problem, and Discover what Information is needed 2. Information Seeking Strategies: Students look at all of the possible sources, and decide which ones are best for their question 3. Location and Access: Students locate both the sources they will use and the information in the sources 4. Use of Information: Students engage with the text, and decide what information will be used 5. Synthesis: Students organize and present the information 6. Evaluation: Students judge the efficacy of the product and the efficiency of the process

Guided Inquiry Design- Stages:

The Guided Inquiry process consists of 8 steps followed in a linear fashion. 1. Open: students are invited to explore the topic, and spark interests 2. Immerse: students build on their background information through activities such as field trips or looking at real world examples 3. Explore: students begin to skim through resources and information, finding what jumps out to them, and what they want to explore further and learn more about 4. Identify: students develop their Inquiry question to explore further 5. Gather: using various resources and media, students gather the information needed for their questions 6. Create: Through interpretation, analysis, and summary, students create a way to showcase what they have learned 7. Share: Through this process, students are now experts on their subject, and share their products and what they have learned with their peers 8. Evaluate: students are evaluated by the teachers throughout the process, but are also guided through a self evaluation and reflection on what they have learned, while it is still fresh.
