Semantics is simply making meaning of words. It is reading comprehension.
Explicit Instruction
Note:
Deliberate Consistent Feedback
Teachers shouldn't assume learners are "getting it". Checks for understanding are important!
A+ Instruction
Connecting letters to their sounds is the next step after developing phonological awareness. According to Reading Rockets, letter-sound correspondence should be taught in the visual to auditory direction (reading) and the auditory to visual direction (spelling).
Our brain is designed to consume visual content. And it makes sense: 90% of the information we process comes to us through sight.
Teaching syllable types and syllable division is essential. Identifying the syllable type can help learners know the sound of the vowel within the syllable.
Diagnostic Teaching
Automaticity
Assessment
Individualized
Building fluency; "Automaticity is critical to freeing all the student’s attention and cognitive resources for comprehension and expression" (Reading Rockets).
Instruction is based on frequent assessment; Formal and informal- diagnostics, tests, assignments, exit tickets, anecdotal notes
Instruction tailored to fit learners' needs. Not "one size fits all" method.
Morphology is the study of the structure of words, including base/root words, prefixes, and suffixes. Morphology aids in comprehension.
Syntax involves "grammar, sentence variation, and the mechanics of language" (Reading Rockets).
Write a great text by clicking on Text in the left sidebar. Note: the fonts, size, and color should match the theme you are discussing.
Systematic and Cumulative
The scope and sequence of learning should follow that of typical language development. Instruction begins with the most basic concepts and builds on itself to more challenging concepts.
Visual content is a cross-cutting, universal language, like music. We are capable of understanding images from millions of years ago, even from other cultures.
Phonological awareness activities (such as identifying rhyming words) are key to literacy development. Phonemic awareness (segmenting or "chopping" words into their sounds/phonemes) aids in spelling.
