Le Isole Britanniche formano un grande arcipelago situato nell' Europa nord-occidentale, tra l' Oceano Atlantico a ovest, il Mar Celtico a sud-ovest, il Mare del Nord a est e il Canale della Manica a sud. L' arcipelago comprende due isole maggiori, la Gran Bretagna e l' Irlanda, e molti altri arcipelaghi minori come quelli delle isole Ebridi, delle isole Orcadi e delle isole Shetland.

Il clima

Dovunque domina il clima oceanico atlantico, caratterizzato da abbondanti precipitazioni, al quale corrispondono gli ambienti delle praterie a sud e della brughiera a nord.

La Storia

Nel 55 a.C. i Romani sbarcarono in Gran Bretagna al comando di Giulio Cesare, ma la conquista della Bretagna, come si chiamò la nuova provincia romana, iniziò solo nel 43 d.C., sotto l' imperatore Claudio.Nel V secolo con il declino di Roma, la Bretagna venne invasa da varie popolazioni germaniche tra cui quelle degli Angli e dei Sassoni, i cui antichi idiomi sono all' origine della lingua inglese e della cultura "anglosassone".
