Program Design - Developing Our Team’s Language Program

The Big Picture

Program Design is never simple. To ensure that your language courses fit together seamlessly into an integrated, well designed program that works for your students and institution, this module walks you and your team step-by-step through a program design process. Our templates, checklists, guides and other resources will help you collect and collate information you need in order to ‘think like an expert designer’ and make the critical decisions required for building your own CEFR-aligned language program. The Program is built on a platform called "Notion" . Notion is an all-in-one workspace app that combines note-taking, project management, wikis, and databases. It's highly customizable and allows you to create your own system forteam work and team projects , and this is why we chose to use this tool for our program.. Think of it as a digital LEGO set for productivity.

The final stage ensures successful curriculum implementation by gathering staff feedback and fostering a Professional Learning Community (PLC).

  • What Can You Do on the Platform?
  • Conduct surveys to gather staff feedback.
  • Facilitate discussion forums for ongoing collaboration and knowledge-sharing.
  • Monitor curriculum implementation and identify areas for improvement.

Instructors develop activities, materials, and teaching strategies to help students achieve learning outcomes. This stage also integrates lexical and grammatical knowledge. What Can You Do on the Platform?

  • Use lesson planning templates to organize activities, objectives, and materials.
  • Access a library of pre-built lesson components and assessments.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to design and refine lessons.

This stage focuses on gathering input from stakeholders to understand institutional needs and define the graduate profile. It ensures the program aligns with future market demands and equips students with key competencies. What can you do on the platform:

  • Use customizable templates to conduct needs analysis surveys.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders through shared documents and discussion boards.
  • Collect and analyze data to visualize institutional requirements and graduate expectations.

A grading system is designed to reflect key learning objectives, balancing formative and summative assessments. What Can You Do on the Platform?

  • Customize grading rubrics for different courses.
  • Create and manage assessments, including quizzes, projects, and exams.
  • Track student performance in real-time and provide feedback.

Educators determine the best course structure—whether a single project-based unit, a two-part structure (input-heavy first, output-heavy second), or multiple smaller units. What Can You Do on the Platform?

  • Choose from course templates that support different structures.
  • Use scheduling tools to divide courses into units.
  • Visualize and compare different course design models.

This stage consolidates all elements into a structured syllabus, outlining course structure, learning objectives, grading policies, and unit overviews. What Can You Do on the Platform?

  • Generate automated syllabi based on course content and objectives.
  • Integrate assessment models and course policies.
  • Share the syllabus with students and faculty for easy access.

Unit-level learning objectives are broken down into specific lesson objectives, ensuring clear progression and alignment with unit goals. What Can You Do on the Platform?

  • Map lesson objectives to unit-level goals.
  • Track and refine learning outcomes using a content management system.
  • Align lesson objectives across units automatically.

This stage defines the core learning objectives using Can Do descriptors from the CEFR. It ensures a smooth progression of competencies across different course levels. What Can You Do on the Platform?

  • Select and organize Can Do descriptors using a structured framework.
  • Visualize learning progression across course levels with interactive charts.
  • Facilitate team discussions to decide on key competencies.
