Update from the Headmaster

Dear Parents,I am writing this newsletter while away at the annual Catholic Independent Schools' Conference. It has been reaffirming to be here with so many other Heads of Catholic schools. It has left me thinking about the joy of our school and how we help students to flourish. At a prospective parent event in London on Wednesday evening I was able to espouse the essential qualities of our Benedictine ethos which offers a compass for life in a world full of challenges for young people. In assembly on Tuesday I spoke to the students about ensuring they work on the feedback they receive in their assessments (or trial examinations for Y11) in order to help make a difference.

OA Robert Rigby, Lord Mayor of Westminster, very kindly hosted our reception in London on Wednesday

Update from the Headmaster

I was able to see our core value of hospitality first hand at an Old Amplefordian event in Oxford on Thursday evening where we had representatives from former students who left from 2015 all the way through to 2024. In Sport this week the U14 girls performed excellently at the national hockey finals on Monday to finish fourth overall - we are so proud of their achievements. On Thursday the U13 girls won a netball festival hosted at Ampleforth with victories over Aysgarth, Queen Mary's, Ripon Grammar School and Hymers College. Last Saturday I enjoyed watching the U14 Hockey boys in a 0-0 draw against Scarborough College in which the score line did not reflect the entertainment value. I also caught the second halves of our senior boys Football fixtures against St Peter's with our 1st XI on the wrong side of a 6-3 defeat but our 2nd XI coming back from 2-0 down to win 3-2.

Update from the Headmaster

If you were near Ampleforth Last Saturday evening you will have heard the volume and quality of our musicians as SHAC Rock took centre stage with an eclectic mix of bands and songs. This student-led event always delivers and shows our community at its best in support of each other. Our choral singers are simply warming up of course, as they prepare for their tour of Paris in the February half-term.Last Saturday also saw a successful last day of the school shoot. Our students and our very own Eliz Cook work tirelessly all year round and will celebrate all of the achievements after half-term at the annual shoot dinner. A busy week, as ever at Ampleforth - our students will have earned their half-term break when it comes. Best wishes, Jon

UK Linguistics Olympiad

On Wednesday, some students took part in this year's UK Linguistics Olympiad, where they worked through very complex and demanding language tasks on Proto-Basque, SENĆOŦEN, Cherokee, and Egyptian. Additionally, they had to identify common patterns in vocabulary related to colours in Ejagham, Matsés, Seri, Guambiano, Teribe, Amuzgo, and several other languages - wow!

Message from Mrs Dent

There have been some glimpses of Spring this week, perhaps still a little way off, but definitely on the horizon: snowdrops, slightly lighter mornings and the treat of some beautiful blue-sky days. One of these fell on Wednesday as the girls took part in the annual Inter-house Cross Country event. There were plenty of strong runs from St Aidan's, but the best thing of all was the way in which everyone gave their best shot and made the most of the opportunity to get out and enjoy our wonderful valley. There's nothing quite like the feeling of a hot shower and mug of hot chocolate after an afternoon of fresh air too. The girls are doing an amazing job of powering through the winter months with grit and stamina. It's dizzying to reflect on just how much they manage to pack into the weeks - it really is a revolving door of variety and activity. Some are looking forward to school trips over the half term break (Paris with Schola, Greece with the Classics dept) and others will be knuckling down to yet more revision. All are well deserving of a rest and we wish everyone the best of catch-ups with family and friends.

Chinese New Year

Tiffany, Olivia, Phobe and Alex are making the most of Chinese New Year celebrations. Last weekend they joined a trip out to a restaurant in York, run by our EAL department and this Sunday we'll be hosting a follow up dumpling party at St Aidan's. These four will be hard at work all afternoon with Ms Redgate, preparing delicious snacks for a guest list made up of our Chinese and other EAL students at the college.

In other news.......

We're immensely proud of Alix (A24, pictured below) who has secured a place at Cambridge University to study Music. Dora came out of retirement to enjoy 15 minutes of fame on stage a SHAC rock last Saturday. Our intrepid four, Willow, Isabel, Katie and Hattie put their best feet forward on their practice Gold expedition in the Yorkshire Dales, returning rosy cheeked and tired, but having had a brilliant time with a great sense of achievement.

A reminder that if you'd like to keep up with the goings on of the House and girls, then do find us on social media. Please do also feel free to drop me a line with news or pictures of interesting or note-worthy things the girls have been up to in the holidays. It's always nice to share their experience more widely on these pages to celebrate the many gifts and achievements of the girls.

Nearly there...

This half term has been a busy, challenging and important one in many ways for all of the boys in house. Academically there have been trial examinations, classroom assessments, effort grades and increased focus on course content. In sport there has been school hockey, sevens, football, along with inter-house swimming, basketball and cross-country. Furthermore there have been Mathematics and Liguistics challenges, academic clubs and societies, debates, parents days, Duke of Edinburgh to name a few. Importantly, spiritually we have developed Lectio, built strong Deanery groups, had many boys participating in Mass or boys preparing to be confirmed. Overall, I am proud of all that the boys have done. Wednesday showed that there is an inner-steel running through the house as the boys demonstrated real heart as they took on the muddy cross-country course around the valley. The good spirits that were evident show a real team mentality and a resilience that will stand the boys in good stead as the year progresses. I hope that half term brings a much needed break and rest and look forward to more success next half term.

And yet another busy week (I don't think we ever not have busy weeks at Ampleforth), and the boys are looking forward to one more week of school and then a well deserved rest. This week we performed in the House lunchtime recital in main hall, enjoyed SHAC Rock, and gave our best in the inter house cross country run on Wednesday.

Dear Parents and Guardians, Yesterday's Cross Country was a stunning effort from the boys of St Hugh's House, with our boys dominating the places in the seniors and intermediates races. Lancelot (Y13) finished about half-a-mile in front of his nearest competitor, bolting up Park House Hill and stretching his gap with every stride. He had Hugo (Y12) flying the flag behind him; Hugo finished in third place. The Intermediate runners were just as dominant with Arthur (Y9), Cullen (Y10) and Ivan (Y10) finishing in first, second and third, respectively. Most impressive, though, were the boys who proved to themselves that they could run the distances without stopping. It was a wonderful House effort. I wish the House community a safe and happy half-term break and look forward to the return to school later this month for more high-level sport, great activities and the Years 11 and 12 Parents Day. Message from Ms Paterson

Dear Parents, This week in St Margarets Many of the girls performed at SHAC rock with star appearances by India, Arabella, Olivia Brett, Dominga and Niamh. The girls had a lovely night all years were present and it was spectacular for all. Well done to those girls who took part it takes real courage and talent! This week year nine girls played in the National hockey tournament well done those girls playing matches against gruelling competition coming fourth overall out of eight teams. This week also so the eagerly anticipated House cross country race and event which everyone really looks forward to! We had another Stella performance by Olivia Bellamy and Elizabeth Bellamy who won their age category. Well done ladies! There were many socials as well, as the house has tried to prioritised a bit of socialising and downtime given all the activities, exams assessments and commitments of the girls. Year 11 enjoyed a deli evening post mocks and so many of them received so many excellent results. Long may the hard work continue given the dedication of St Margarets House staff and the girls work ethic I'm sure this will be the case. This week we said goodbye to Moragh for a short time. She should be back with us after the Easter holidays. Many well wishes from parents were most welcome. I know she appreciated it. Whatever the plans for half term , I hope everyone is able to strike the balance between rest work and play. Wishing you all the best, Rebecca

Inter House Cross Country

Dear Parents, As expected, many of your lovely daughters are shattered from an extremely busy January and start of February. They are looking forward to family time, fun with friends, sleep, rest and relaxation next week as we enjoy the long half term. The year 13s will be preparing for their mock exams and year 11s no doubt will be consolidating their revision with feedback from teachers and tutors given this week. Yr 9s have some choices to make about GCSE options while year 10s make sure they are on task with their GCSE subjects. Year 12s have started to lead the House and the College now that year 13s are focused on summer exams. Some of year 12s are organising volunteering and charity work while others are planning leadership roles in sport, chaplaincy and House. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Charmaine

Sporting achievements have been abundant, with Agnes and Willow showcasing incredible talent at the National Hockey Finals, bringing home a commendable 4th place finish. Benjamin demonstrated his kickboxing prowess, earning two well-deserved medals at his competition on Sunday. Our netball girls dominated the Ampleforth Invitational on Thursday, securing a fantastic victory. And finally, huge congratulations to all our cross-country runners who put in brilliant performances at Terrington on Monday. Well done to everyone on their efforts and successes this week! It was fantastic to see students from across the school come together to perform and support their peers. Student Focus

Jacques This week's Junior House spotlight shines brightly on Jacques! In just my first half term, Jacques has truly impressed me with his kind and warm demeanor. He's always happy to lend a hand, consistently displays excellent morals, and acts as a fantastic role model for the younger students in our house. Jacques's outstanding character was perfectly exemplified this past Monday at Terrington. During the cross-country race, he selflessly sacrificed a strong position to assist a younger student who had fallen. This act of compassion and sportsmanship speaks volumes about Jacques's character. Thank you, Jacques, for everything you do for Junior House – you make a real difference!
