amity program

Amity Institute is a non-profit organization with over 57 years of experience facilitating cultural exchange. The Intern Program provides international participants the opportunity to live in the U.S., gain teaching experience, and serve as informal ambassadors for their country in U.S. schools.

Who are the interns?

  • Interns are generally in their university studies or have recently graduated in their home country.
  • Many are involved in the field of languages or are preparing to teach English as a Foreign Language.
  • They often have some experience or have worked with youth.
  • Interns are here to gain teaching skills through their assignments, to represent their language, culture and country, and to share their knowledge and ideas.
  • They want to learn first-hand about American culture and improve their English.
  • An intern’s first obligation is to complete their internship at the Host School.
  • They are also volunteers who are role models, ambassadors of good will, active community participants, and integrated members of their Host Family or School environment.
  • All interns have a clean police record in their home country.

SCHOOLWORK

They put together cultural activities such as Carnaval and the Three Kings Day.

They support the DLI program by providing a native model of the language and culture.

They help Spanish teachers by working with small groups or teaching lessons.

Interns assist in the classroom for a minimum of 32 hours per week.

EXPECTATIONS

They are expected to create a bond with the family members: playing games, contribute with house chores, etc.

Interns must have a private room.

Three meals a day (school will provide lunch on week days).

Interns must share their culture with the host family, this might look like cooking typical dishes or exchanging their language with the kids.

Host Families

Occasional transportation

Host families are volunteers, they do not get paid to host.

Interns

Like any family member, interns are expected to help out around the house. However, interns are not babysitters.

Host families are not obligated to take the intern on trips or pay leisure activities for them.
