Despite her success, Mulan was tired of fighting and longed to return to her family. Twelve years had passed and she wished to see her little brother and her parents more than anything in the world. After many long years, Mulan thought it was time to put down her sword. The Emperor himself called for Mulan, recognising the part she had played in his victory. “You have fought for this kingdom for many years. You have led great armies to victories. Tell me, what can we do to honour you?” The soldier known as Hua replied, “Your esteemed Excellency. I only wish to take my steed and ride as fast as the wind to my homestead. Despite being puzzled as to why the General hadn’t asked for wealth or a high-ranking office, the Emperor smiled and declared that General Hua was released of his position in the army with full honours. Now free, Mulan’s service to the army was over and she could return home. Back at home, the sun was setting over the farm when a figure appeared on the horizon. As the horse came nearer, the soldier took off their helmet and shook their head. Jet-black hair flowed down over the soldier’s shoulders.

“It can’t be! It’s my Mulan!” Mulan’s father hurried towards his long-lost daughter. “Father! Mother! Brother who is not so little anymore! I am home!” she shouted, getting off her horse and running towards her family. They embraced, tears streaming down their faces. They were sure their daughter must have died in the thick of war. Mulan was overjoyed to be home in the arms of her family. “Come, come! Let us feed you!” her mother insisted. “I’d like to change my clothes first,” Mulan said. “The years of wearing this heavy armour have taken their toll. I wish for lighter clothes.” With that, Mulan was led to her room, where she took off the armour. Her robes and hairbrushes had not been moved. Even her bed was neatly made and a fresh orchid bloomed on the table. She could see the love her family had for her everywhere she looked. Sitting down on her bed, she let out a sigh. Home at last, she thought.
