Background: Women diagnosed with breast cancer face an increased risk of comorbidities and early mortality, and one possible explanation is their accelerated biological aging. Telomere attrition has been proposed as a biomarker of biological aging, which could be prevented by interventions on behavioral factors, such as diet. In recent years, avocado has been in the spotlight of nutritional research due to its unique nutritional profile. Main aim: to evaluate the effect of consumption of one avocado per day on biological aging, as measured by telomere length, in women breast cancer survivors as compared to habitual diet (with less than 2 avocados per week). Secondary aims include changes in telomerase activity and biological markers of inflammation and oxidative stress. Additional aims include classical markers of cardiovascular disease (glucose metabolism, lipid profile, blood pressure); anthropometric measurements; quality of life and fatigue; and diet quality.
Methodology: A randomized, parallel group, controlled trial in 120 breast cancer survivors will be conducted. Participants will be randomly assigned to the intervention (one avocado/day) or control group (habitual diet with less than 2 avocados/week) and will be followed for a 4-months period. At baseline and at the end of the intervention a general questionnaire will be administered; blood and urine samples will be collected; anthropometric and blood pressure measurements will be taken; and diet, physical activity, quality of life, and fatigue will be assessed. Linear regression models will be used to compare mean change from baseline to four months in the main variable (telomere length) and secondary variables (markers of inflammation, oxidative stress, classical cardiovascular disease markers, anthropometric measurements, quality of life, and diet quality) between the intervention and control group.
