In order to graduate, you must take the following throughout your high school years:

The course guide is divided into nine sections. English, math, science, social studies, foreign language, physical education/athletics, Career and Technical Education, fine arts and additional electives. Course Difficulty

Pros & cons of harder classes

When you enter high school, you begin to hear about on level, honors, and AP classes. It is important to consider outside time commitments, and the course load you can best handle.

PROS: CONS: In the end, it is up for you to decide which courses are better to take on level as compared to Honors and AP. If you choose an AP class but want to level down, you can level down within the first week of school.

  • Challenging yourself
  • Higher weighted GPA
  • Colleges consider rigor of course load
  • Harder courses encourage you work diligently
  • Time consuming
  • Difficult to balance if you take too many
  • Poor performance may impact your unweighted GPA negatively
  • Takes more effort

AP and Honors Courses

Honors classes

AP Classes

AP classes are college-level courses which are offered for high school students. At CHS9, there are four AP classes which students can take: AP Computer Science, Principles and AP Human Geography, Ap Pre-Calculus, and AP Spanish IV language & culture. These courses have rigorous college-level coursework and you may earn college credit for the AP course if you pass the AP exam at the end of the school year.

Honors classes are intended to be more rigorous. Honors classes are weighted on a 5.0 scale and they are still high school level courses. Honors level courses are available for various subjects.

MAintaining balance

Maintaining Balance

hone your time management skills

When you take harder courses, it is important to balance academics, extracurriculars and mental health.

  • Do your work as soon as it is assigned
  • Use your class time wisely
  • Try to get your homework done in school when you have free time
  • Start studying for tests early;do not wait until the last minute to start studying
  • Set reminders for yourself if you forget things easily
  • Do not overwork yourself and take breaks as needed
  • Learn from your mistakes and do not get demotivated
  • Use a planner or calendar app to stay organized

Time management is an essential skill to have; not just in high school, but in the future. High school is a vast jump from middle school, so be prepared to sacrifice a portion of your free time for your school work.
