"All news is biased"
Through surveys, listening sessions, and interviews, we have heard a lot of this:
"The news is all bad"
"What can I do anyway?"
We flipped those sentiments into action-oriented "How Might We" questions, and asked attendees to help us brainstorm possible answers to them.
How might we use local news to celebrate wins and build stronger sense of community?
How might we use local news to drive community members to action?
How might we use local news to elevate voices and bridge differences?
"What can I do anyway?"

So what's next?
- We will continue to synthesize data from listening sessions and public engagements, building towards the release of our ecosystem map in April 2025
- Following the release of the map, we will be holding a public convening to help guide our future investments.
- Keep in touch to stay in the loop about what's coming next!

Reframing Stories to Highlight Shared Values: Rather than framing an issue as inherently divisive, what if local news focused first on shared values and the differences of approach towards those values? Trauma-Informed Journalism How can local news do better to report on sensitive topics without further traumatizing audiences, ensuring all perspectives are presented respectfully and empathetically?
Representation and Diversity in Reporting In order to reflect the news, newsrooms need to look like their community. They also must be more intentional about being imbedded in their community to build trust. Creating Dialogue Spaces What if in addition to focusing on reporting, newsrooms worked to build spaces where community members could grapple with local issues together?

Showcasing Collaboration What if newsrooms focused on the collaborative spirit of Lancaster County, celebrating positive connections and ongoing efforts within the community? Providing Clear Calls to Action In addition to covering an issue, could there be sidebar content that shows information about public convenings about the issue, or QR codes that allow a user to learn more about the topic? Accessible and Inclusive Reporting Paywalls often keep consumers from being able to learn more about topics they care about. Additional forms of content are also important (audio, video, etc) Youth Engagement and Media Literacy Schools and community groups could use local news sources to engage young people on local issues. Community members need better support in being able to discern misinformation and disinformation.

"They don't tell the whole story"
- Our community is divided along stark political lines, but those divides are largely defined by national debates, rather than local ones.
- Many people feel the media is biased, even at the local level, but the feeling is not as strong.
- What few opportunities we have to discuss and debate local issues are framed through a national lens.
"I can't even bare to turn it on anymore."
- We are bombarded with bad news, whether it is national news covering political upheavals, local news leading with crime, or social media stirring debates and toxicity.
- The onslaught of negativity and lack of hopeful stories has lead many to tune out entirely, or become deeply pessimistic about our institutions and even their fellow community members.
"Where do I even start?"
- For the many who have strong opinions about local issues, there is no clear pathway to take action.
- Lack of resources for local news sources means it's harder than ever to learn about important developments that could impact your community.
- And when these issues are covered, ways to get involved or contribute are not provided, leading to disengagement.
