20 YEARS OF TRANSFORMATION IN THE VENTURE CAPITAL INDUSTRY

n our journey through the development of Venture Capital in Spain, today we want to focus on the evolution of Management Venture Companies as a key element of the Industry, whose role has fundamentally transformed in the past 20 years.

INVESTMENT ACTIVITY OF MANAGEMENT COMPANIES

he volume of investment has tripled in these years, reaching a peak in 2022 of over 9 billion, despite the significant impact of the liquidity crisis from 2008 to 2012. During this period, many venture companies disappeared from the market, especially those linked to Financial Institutions, or exited Spain. However, the industry demonstrated its strength in the recovery from the crisis alongside national management companies and, fundamentally, international ones, which have invested in the Spanish market attracted by good returns and investment opportunities in large transactions. After the years of crisis, deals led by global funds now account for 75% of the invested volume. Highlight the management of the crisis generated by the pandemic and the disruption of global supply chains, where most venture companies activated liquidity plans that allowed the industry to emerge stronger and quickly return to a path of growth. High interest rates resulting from inflationary pressures following COVID, as well as the uncertainties caused by military conflicts, have made it more difficult to leverage new transactions, while the lack of visibility in future returns has hampered divestment operations of portfolio companies. However, expectations are that the market will recover in the coming quarters, aided by reductions in financing costs.

GROWTH OF THE MANAGEMENT COMPANIES UNIVERSE

he base of management companies in Spain has developed significantly in recent years, with more than 140 new players operating in this market. The maturity of the professionals who started the activity, as well as the development of new profiles that have entered the industry alongside the more established management companies, have contributed to the creation of new national venture companies, although some have already been established with a marked international character. At the same time, the venture companies with more years in the market have developed and increasingly have a larger number of vehicles with different investment strategies and a significantly higher volume of assets under management.

EVOLUTION OF INVESTMENT BY MARKET SEGMENT

pain was in 2004 a mid-market, with over 50% of the investment concentrated in this segment. In these years, two effects have occurred: on one hand, the increase in the number of megadeals led by international management companies, and on the other hand, the significant growth of the mid-market, with increasingly larger ticket sizes and major consolidation deals in certain industries, which has resulted in an increase of more than 50% in the volume invested in this segment.
