Who is Dr. Darold Treffert?
(Click to learn more)
What is a savant?
Savant syndrome is a condition where individuals with developmental disabilities or intellectual impairments exhibit extraordinary abilities in specific areas, like mathematics, music, art, or memory. These abilities often exceed what is typically expected for their cognitive level and are distinct from the overall disability. While sometimes associated with autism, savant syndrome can also occur in individuals with other developmental conditions or brain injuries. Dr. Darold Treffert referred to these areas of intactness as "Islands of Genius"
What is Archipelago?
Archipelago is an extraordinary evening bringing together remarkable individuals with savant abilities from around the world. This inspiring evening of cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, gallery viewing, and concert fosters collaboration, connection, and celebration of unique talents.
"Archipelago": from Greek arkhi- ‘chief’ + pelagos ‘sea’. Meaning a group of islands.

- How perfect of a circle can you draw?
- Do you have perfect pitch?
- Can you remember what the weather was in your hometown on a specific date 3 years ago?
- How quickly can you do multiplication problems?
Every week, our research team at the Treffert Center meets amazing people from around the world who have marvelous skills and concurrent cognitive disabilities, such as autism, seizures, or brain damage from a head injury. Individuals with this seemingly paradoxical combination of conditions are known as savants.
Dr. Treffert, the world’s leading authority on savant research, has said that, until we can explain how savant syndrome works, we can never fully understand the brain.
To this end, our team is developing what we believe to be the world’s first comprehensive, multiple-domain savant evaluation protocol.
Moniyi Adewole and his family flew to Treffert Studios from Nigeria so our team could better understand his musical abilities and provide guidance for their family.

Michelle Scheeland
Michelle Scheeland was born in Lancaster, California but currently lives in Oklahoma. Upon becoming an aquired savant she developed the ability to understand and identify patterns in nature and perceives more of her environment than before. This saved her life and has helped her son to overcome sciatica. It also caused a compulsion to learn. This has been a double-edged sword as life has not been easy. She would like to go back to school for physical therapy, and would love to speak on her experiences with others.

Jonny Rino
Jonny Rino was a CNC machinist and welder until 2017, when he received a severe concussion in an accident at work. He awoke several days later with an unexplainable urge to try to draw, previously having no artistic ability. He’s since found enjoyment in creating various forms of art. He is able to work with soft pastels and also sculpt wood and metal. He hopes to continue to explore different mediums in the near future. Jonny now resides in Northern Maine with his daughter, where he hopes to establish a home-based art studio/gallery, permaculture micro farm, and an online store to sell his art.
