Update from the Headmaster

Dear Parents, In this week of Christian Unity, the Schola Cantorum have been to Durham Cathedral to sing with their Cathedral Choir. They sang exceedingly well, performing lots of new music without being fazed. Their attitude is superb. Our sporting sides have enjoyed a positive week with boys' Hockey starting their seasons very successfully, playing 11 fixtures throughout the age groups against Pocklington and Giggleswick in a triangular last weekend, and managing to win 7, draw 2 while losing only 2. The same positivity should be said for the girls who followed up from a clean sweep in their first Netball fixtures with some further great results against Giggleswick and Terrington Hall at the weekend.

Update from the Headmaster

In Rugby, the U15 boys are now through to the last 8 of the National Bowl competition after a close-fought victory against Manchester Grammar School, while the senior boys had success in an unbeaten 10-aside tournament hosted at Pocklington.

Update from the Headmaster

Year 11 students are coming to the end of their trial examination week as I write. We know from experience that these do not always go to plan for them, but they provide an important moment for reflection and learning. At the start of the week, I spoke in assembly to Year 11 to let them know that our staff are there for them, to accompany and support them through the trial examinations and to provide feedback which will help. The week cannot be simply something which happens, but something which has a positive impact for their future academic studies and results. We know they always improve, sometimes significantly, from the trial examinations, but it is key that they focus on the feedback given to help fill gaps in knowledge and hone their examination technique.

Update from the Headmaster

The end of this week was marked by a visit from British Olympian Anthony Harding, who won Bronze at Paris 2024 in the 3m synchro diving. Anthony battled Storm Éowyn to come and talk to our Year 10 students about his journey to achievement in elite sports. The message about dedication in pursuit of excellence and working hard to fulfil dreams resonated strongly with our students. Best wishes, Jon

Message from Mrs Dent

Warm wishes from a very windy North Yorkshire - as I write I am watching the girls grapple with hair, clothing and belongings amid the 60mph gusts. There's plenty of laughter and cries of excitement too - a reminder that there is joy to be found in the little moments of the 'every day', even a windy walk between lessons. Year 11 are reaching the end of their trial examination week, a key moment as they get to experience the routines of public examinations and then reflect on the preparations and habits that will best support their goals this summer. They're certainly looking forward to an evening of relaxation before getting back into lessons tomorrow morning. Also this week, members of the house have: - visited Kings Cross on an A level Geography Fieldwork day investigating the regeneration of the area. - attended debating society - visited the St Pio's soup kitchen in Bradford - attended confirmation classes - sung evensong with the Schola at Durham Cathedral - won netball matches - joined a music dept trip to the Glasshouse venue in Newcastle There's no such thing as a typical week in St Aidan's and we wouldn't have it any other way! Here's wishing you all a fantastic week ahead.

Our Year 13 A level Artists are working hard in preparation for their assessment this coming week, which contributes to completion of their course portfolios. They will spend a total of 15 hours in the Art Studio completing a piece of Art he conception and development of which they have been working towards for weeks now. I had a wander around the Art studios yesterday and the work they are producing really is remarkable - everyone will get a chance to view A level work at Exhibition, including the pieces students will be producing for their final piece from February.

How very proud we are of Hattie, Maggie and Willow, who reached out of their comfort zones to run at cross country in Skipton last weekend. And the great news is that they have all been invited to represent North Yorkshire at the Northern Counties Cross Country match in February.

A reminder that if you'd like to keep up with the goings on of the House and girls, then do find us on social media. Please do also feel free to drop me a line with news or pictures of interesting or note-worthy things the girls have been up to in the holidays. It's always nice to share their experience more widely on these pages to celebrate the many gifts and achievements of the girls.

Week 3 of the term has been a busy one! The sheer number of events, activities and challenges has been mind-blowing. From a packed academic week including Year 11 trial assessments, Year 9 options and a full week of lessons through to sports fixtures and inter-house competitions, it really has been a whirlwind (figuratively and literally as Storm Eowyn blusters outside my study!). The boys have been challenged this week to aim for high standards, and I have seen evidence that this is being achieved with an increase in positive Aps, a reduction in lateness but moreover the “feel” of the house, which is purposeful and calm. Happy and content. This week we have also remembered those that we have lost and our thoughts and prayers remain with the York family. We were lucky that Fr Richard was able to lead us in a mass that was dedicated to Charlie. Times like this remind me of the importance of the house community and support network. The boys rally around one another in a way rarely seen elsewhere, it is heartwarming to see. As the half term progresses, it will soon be time for a brief rest and I urge everyone to let the Travel coordinator know travel plans for half term as soon as possible.

Message from the Housemaster

Dear Parents and Guardians, Junior House has had a busy week! We celebrated birthdays with delicious cake, enjoyed successful hockey and netball fixtures on Saturday (apologies for the midweek Harrogate trip), and had a fun-filled trip to the Designer Outlet. A generous donation from Willoughby Phillips has brought exciting Nerf battles back to the House. We're looking forward to Schola Mass tonight, where the Junior Schola will be performing. It promises to be another busy and exciting week ahead for Junior House! I hope this is helpful! Warmly, Mike Slingsby Head of Junior House

Tutorial - Inspiration

Recently, Junior House has been delving into the fascinating topic of inspiration. Students have been exploring what inspires them, from renowned artists and athletes to family members and everyday heroes. This exploration of inspiration has been a valuable experience for the students, fostering creativity, self-reflection, and a deeper understanding of the human spirit.

Message from the Housemaster

Dear Parents and Guardians, There have been some wonderful moments in the House this week. As a House we celebrated Hugo becoming captain of the 1st XI Football team and when he gets to lead the team we are hopeful he will do a great job. Redmond captained the U15 Rugby team to victory in the fourth round of the Continental Tyres National U15 School Bowl and Noah scored twice in the Firsts Hockey win over Scarborough College. Tom visited The Glasshouse International Centre for Music to watch Tertis and Aronowitz International Viola competitions rounds, while James, Humphrey, Tom and Wilfrid performed brilliantly with Schola at Durham Cathedral. The Y11 have been head-down, focusing on their GCSE Mock examinations, while many in the top year have been finalising their NEA coursework drafts for their respective subjects. Message from Ms Paterson

Dear Parents The atmosphere is Saint Margaret’s this week has been contemplative studious and prayerful. With the year 11 studying for their trial exams the girls in house have been respectful of each other and made sure the house really has embodied a monastic ambience. Ora et labora truly has been the name of the game. Year 13 continue to be a shining example to us all of what hard work is, this top year have been so consistent to their approach. At the time of writing the wind is howling outside and it's very cold the girls are trying to keep cosy indoors. This week in some downtime they have been in the study or the snug watching Pocahontas 1 and 2. Last week they watched all of Julia Donaldson’s cartoons. I think that next week we might move on to Pride and Prejudice - I live in hope... Leading me to my next point! This week the school launches the Year of the Jubilee. This is the year of hope the students, along with the rest of the Catholic world, are called to saintliness. For most of Saint Margaret’s girls I'm sure this will be an easy feat - It is the staff that need to work on it! I am always impressed by how kind the girls can be to each other and their consideration for one another. Time is flying and it’s now nearly the end of January. As it gets lighter we hope the girls will be able to enjoy more time outdoors! Until then the girls continue to socialise and make the most of being in the warm! Best wishes Rebecca

Dear Parents, We have had an exceptionally busy week with our lovely year eleven girls practising exam technique for their trial exams and working incredibly hard. They studied every spare moment and developed some good study routines going forward for the next four to five months in order to peak in the summer GCSE cycle. They were supported by staff, tutors and year thirteen's who are also preparing for their mocks in February. Year twelve's are thinking about leadership positions and responsibilities at College as well as organising volunteering and fundraising events during the Pope's Jubilee Year of Hope. Kindest regards, Charmaine
