Greetings from the President
It is a pleasure to present to you with this digital magazine to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the formation of the Spanish Association for Cancer Research, ASEICA. It is impossible to detail all the activities that have positioned ASEICA as a benchmark in the defense and promotion of basic, translational, and clinical research in oncology in our country. For you to get to know us better, we have prepared this interactive platform that shows examples of advocacy actions aimed at improving R&D&I in Spain. You will also learn about awards, research grants, and national and international collaborations through which ASEICA and its different working areas (ASEICA-Youth, -Women, -Learn, -MED, -Communication) promote both young and established talent, break gender barriers, drive innovation, and enhance interaction between academic and hospital centers. We have also included highlighted outreach activities and social commitment.
To the members who are already part of ASEICA, thank you for your support and for making this association more vibrant than ever. For those who are not yet members, "Take Action" and join us to achieve together our global goal: to improve the diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of oncological diseases."

Advocacy Actions
Menu
The central objective of ASEICA is to promote cancer research in Spain. With continuous activity on social networks (X, LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook) and a significant presence in the media, ASEICA serves a reference in denouncing budgetary, bureaucratic, and infrastructure limitations that significantly compromise the scientific and human potential of our society. Over the past 40 years, ASEICA has presented more than 86 press releases and reports, manifestos and prepared reports, manifestos and positions containing specific short- and medium-term proposals.
In the following sections, we highlight some examples of actions that have had a great impact on the scientific community, administrations and civil society:

Examples of ASEICA reports
In 2018, the report 'Committed to Cancer Research,' prepared in collaboration with the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) and La Caixa Foundation, highlighted the significant potential in cancer research in Spain. However, it also pointed out the aging of the scientific community and the challenge of attracting new talent. This report was presented to the Secretary of State for Innovation to establish a consensus National Cancer Research Strategy.
2019. In collaboration with the AECC, over 650,000 signatures were collected to support a National Cancer Research Plan. This document proposed 13 measures to achieve competitive research and attract and retain talent.

Examples of ASEICA Manifestos
In 2018, ASEICA and SEOM conducted an internal survey among researchers aged 40, revealing the discouragement of many young individuals due to job instability, bureaucracy, and a lack of funding in R&D. Over 1,500 individuals and 104 entities endorsed this initiative. In collaboration with the SOMMa alliance, ASEICA presented the "Manifesto for Science – We want to invent, please!" in 2019. This manifesto denounced the deterioration of the Spanish scientific system and called for budget increases in R&D. The manifesto received the support of four other scientific societies, 27 directors of the most relevant health centers and institutes, and 40 highly esteemed researchers in the country. Additionally, a Long-Term Strategy for Science and Innovation in Spain was proposed in collaboration with SOMMa and ASEBIO."

Scientific Policy Actions
ASEICA has presented more than 15 protests against delays in the schedules of the calls of research project grants, and disagreements with various modifications to the Science Law. ASEICA has advocated for the rights of predoctoral researchers, early-career professionals, and established investigators. These actions were carried out in collaboration with various partner entities and come with specific proposals.
ASEICA has also participated in numerous meetings with political representatives, both individually and in events with different organizations.
In 2023, ASEICA proposed a set of 13 actions to improve the working conditions of researchers at all stages of their professional careers.

Promoting Innovation
Topics of the 'Innovation Day' include:
The Spanish scientific community has significant potential in knowledge transfer. Our country ranks among the top 10 in Europe for the competitive projects funded by the European Research Council (ERC). However, the number of patents and biotechnology-based companies is notably low. ASEICA is concerned about this, which is why it has been organizing 'Innovation Day' since 2017 in collaboration with SEOM.

Work Areas
Menu
One of our main objectives at ASEICA has been to promote cancer research in Spain. Our activities are aimed at the professional development of scientists, both male and female, in cancer research at any stage of their careers. We are also concerned about the significant challenges in attracting and retaining young talent. Female researchers continue to be a minority in leadership positions, leading us to believe that changes in scientific policies are necessary to address these limitations. To tackle these issues, ASEICA has established the ASEICA-Youth, ASEICA-MED, and ASEICA-Women areas. These areas are complemented by ASEICA-Learn and ASEICA-Communication, which focus on promoting oncology education and disseminating various actions and projects of the Association.

ASEICA-Women
ASEICA-Women was established in 2018 to promote the professional development and leadership of women researchers in cancer. Through various campaigns such as 'Take Action,' 'More Scientists Than You Think,' and 'I Can-You Can,' ASEICA-Women has positioned itself as a key advocacy agent to reduce gender inequalities in our sector. ASEICA-Women also organizes workshops, networking events, training courses, and activities to promote new vocations. One of its most successful campaigns is #CONOCELAS ('#GETTOKNOWTHEM’), through which ASEICA-Women has successfully put more than 300 female researchers 'on the map,' reaching over 26,000 students from primary school to university. Moreover, ASEICA-Women awards prizes to educational institutions and female scientists who participate in its activities or serve as role models in promoting women and science in this country.

ASEICA-Women. CONOCELAS (GET TO KNOW THEM)
"CONOCELAS" is a visibility campaign with the slogan "Discover the cancer detectives." The campaign takes place at two levels: (1) through dynamic talks in schools, high schools, and universities to break gender stereotypes and encourage new vocations, and (2) "Putting scientists on the map" through an interactive online platform that dynamically showcases the professional profiles of ASEICA female researchers both inside and outside the laboratory.
Thanks to an agreement with the Merck Salud Foundation (in the years 2022 and 2023), ASEICA has awarded “Awards with a Woman's Name” and Awards to the most active educational institutions in "CONOCELAS"

ASEICA-Youth
ASEICA-Youth was established in 2019 with the aim of promoting and enhancing the professional development of researchers in cancer during the early stages of their careers. This work area aims to highlight the profiles of this young community, contribute to their education through courses, workshops, and mentoring actions, and globally increase their chances of success both within and outside academia. To carry out these activities, ASEICA-Youth has self-organized into a network of predoctoral, postdoctoral, and young leader researchers. We encourage you to explore the various initiatives they carry out through virtual 'cafés' and different types of meetings. Their aim is to serve as a meeting point for the scientific community in oncology at both national and international levels.

History of ASEICA
Menu
1983-2023, 40 years of trajectory
Menu
Formation of ASEICA
ASEICA began to take shape in the late 70s and was formally established on February 17, 1983. The founding members proposed statutes with a national and international scope, which have been strengthened over time to advocate for, promote, and improve cancer research at all levels: basic, translational, and clinical.

Work Areas

ASEICA-Learn
ASEICA-Learn was established in 2022 with the aim of promoting education in oncology, breaking down barriers between basic and clinical professionals, and advancing knowledge transfer. Among its major achievements is the establishment of a Specific Degree in Translational Oncology affiliated with the Complutense University of Madrid. The aim is to update participants on translational research topics related to the causes of cancer and advancements in its diagnosis and treatment. ASEICA has granted scholarships to cover either fully or partially the enrollment in this Specific Degree.

ASEICA-Med
This area was established in 2020 with the purpose of creating a meeting platform for medical professionals who combine their clinical work in cancer with research. One of the early initiatives of ASEICA-Med was to stablish an external advisory committee (Think tank) that reviewed initiatives to promote the profile of the physician-researcher. In November 2022, a group of 40 medical researchers from different hospitals across the country got together for the first ASEICA-Med Retreat. At this meeting, a draft Position Paper regarding the medical-investigator collective was developed and presented in September 2023.

ASEICA is a scientific association aiming to enhance cancer research in this country. But we also have a commitment to society as a whole, so we work to improve patients' access to new therapies, funding mechanisms for science, and the knowledge that society has about cancer and scientific advances. We also collaborate with other scientific, business, and patient societies, as well as with public administrations in advisory roles. Here are some collaborative actions by ASEICA specifically oriented towards patients:
“The cancer patient's experience: Optimization of the pathway and improvement of care and coordination until diagnosis”
