What's in my bag?

by Enrico Niedo

An exploration of the things I carry with me

Start

Who am I?

Hello, My name is Enrico Niedo and I’m currently a Clinical Education and Learning Technology consultant with a health authority. I’m a registered nurse by background having worked for the cardiac services program and the regional pandemic response previously. In my current role, I work with educators of different health backgrounds and support them in their transition to their roles from front line to education and as well support educators to incorporate learning technologies into their clinical teaching.

For this exercise I picked out my work bag that I carry with me in my daily job of supporting health care clinical educators at different practice areas whether it’s in hospitals, community clinics or in some cases, helping out educators who support staff who look after unhoused populations. My day-to-day takes me to my office in an urban center city office or it can take me to a Primary Care clinic in a rural community or a busy hospital in a medium-sized city. In my backpack, I hold the following inventory: - Health Authority Issued Laptop -Wireless Bluetooth Mouse -Portable second-screen monitor - Identification Badge - Health Authority Vest - Multi-tools - Chapstick - Snacks - Box of business cards -Souvenier license from Las Vegas

'What is your daily need for the items in your bag?

The contents in my bag are what I’d consider everything I would ever need when I “take the show on the go”. The key card that I have unlocks different classrooms and conference rooms throughout an area that covers Burnaby through Hope. Part of my role is to teach classes on enhancing clinical education through mentorship or to have meaningful discussions or debriefs with new educators. The key card unlocks rooms to have those interactions that support education and to support the development of a new educator whether I’m doing a presentation using my laptop and a mini projector (not pictures) or handing someone a business card to follow up after a difficult situation.

How might these items be considered "texts" and what do they say about you, the places you inhabit, the cultures with which you engage, and/or the activities you take up?

Scholes (1992), considers the origin of the word text to be linked to “creation” and overtly or in subtext have relation to creating something. These items I would consider to be texts in my role of the supporting growth of new educators and leaders in the health system, the equipment I carry such as business cards and projectors carry text to create their transition into point of care leader roles. The cultures or people that I engage in rely on text as their sources of truth. With what they read or analyze with their text, we form conversations as text in my line of work is considered authority.

Thinking about the title of the course, what are the "text technologies" in your bag, if any? What do these items say about how you engage with language and communication?

In my case, I would highly consider my laptop as a text technology as its critical in my functional role as a clinical consultant working with learning technologies. While the laptop is a communication tool thats got better capabilities than my smartphone, I use my laptop to enhance and create multimodality teaching experiences when I go an meet with different learning groups. Beavis (2015) looks at multimodality as when games and text come together to create a learning experience where the learner changes their behaviour. Sometimes, handing someone a paper algorithm is good enough, I truly want to develop a change in behaviour for the educator.

While not in my bag, I find myself also using the conference room white board to draw, chart and re-emphasize text and my thoughts and discussions with teams to allow the learners that multimodal experience. Beavis (2015) acknowledges that this interplay of simultaneous elements is a component of play and thereby ways to enhance different learners in the classroom. The way I connect with language and communication is allowing this interplay to happen in the classroom, I’ve always wanted to ensure that the learners gather information numerous ways in their learning experiences.

One quick mention is my souvenir license from Area 51 I brought at a gift shop in Las Vegas Nevada. It was the first trip I did with friends after I finished my nursing certification and the words, the picture of the alien represents my personalities and my intrigue for anything weird that I no longer outwardly identify with as I have gotten into my professional role and have just come a long way from being a 23 year old. But I hold it with me as a reminder of who I am with friends and family outside of my work life.

How does the narrative of the (private) contents of your bag compare with the narrative produced by the image you have of yourself or the image you outwardly project?

The private contents of my bag have similarities with the narrative produced by the image I have for myself. But that would not have been the case 10 or even 15 years ago. The growth the I share for people was because of the courses and mentorship that this very same team imparted to me a decade ago. The contents of my bag are that of preparation and organization and this would be a foreign concept to me a few years ago and sometimes when I do go home, something that falls behind. While the values of my workself and my private self align, our characteristics are still different. The focus I share in my work all but disappear when I get home when I reach the family life. The work bag is replaced with a diaper bag and meticulous notes and schedules on my laptop or phone are replaced with scribbles on my forearm or notes on the family calendar on the wall that my partner and I share. The vest as well, a symbol of authority with the department emblazoned on is also gone when I go home, sharing responsibilities and honestly where I am happily told where to go, what to do and what to get.

What would this same bag have looked like, say, 15 or 25 years ago?

This bag for me would be completely different. My previous previous role going back 2 decades ago was a tiling and brick laying apprentice for another company. I had a similar green backpack, but I would be carrying a clipboard with a few pieces of paper telling me where to report to my previous work site. The multitool or a version of it would still be there as I would’ve probably still been driving around a 1988 Acure Integra with a barely functioning alternator. The snacks would be cheaper in quality and my health authority vest would’ve been a reflective vest which was standard issue on a commercial build site. The souvenir Las Vegas drivers license at the time I did not have the means to have it, but would have appreciated it if I could get it.

I think archeologists aiming to understand this temporal period might view the contents of my bag as someone who’s role in the healthcare system might be vague from an archeologist point of view, but in the case of people with a healthcare background, realize how developing frontline leaders and educators are important in a functioning unit. These roles barely get enough support, and having someone who can support those that support others will become evident in the increasing number of people who choose who age out of healthcare roles instead of leaving because they can no longer feel they are supported in it.

How do you imagine an archeologist aiming to understand this temporal period might view the contents of your bag many years in the future?

What do the items in your bag say about the literacies you have? (Continued)

The health authority vest with the emblem of my health authority and the department that I work for has the literacy of the inner workings of the healthcare system. In my department, we work with every team in healthcare who’s goal it is is to improve and enhance their understanding of leadership and education in their healthcare system. This work and this vest unlocks and shares knowledge with everyone in the health system to improve the services that they provide through enhancing the frontline leaders skills in communication, diplomacy and psychological safety.

What do the items in your bag say about the literacies you have?

The bag itself contains literacies from previous careers and hobbies that I have had. In highschool, I was a prolific self professed computer nerd and in the early 2000s, played with the early iteration of webpage design in during that time period, the laptop was chosen out of 3 because I had research the specifications rather than choosing at random or what the newest laptop was. I knew what kind of memory and storage I would need to do the role rather than the “newest” available functions. The multi-tool is a representation of my love of working on cars. In my earlier college years, I woud purchase cheap cars on craigslist and try to update and repair its issues so the cars were usable. Up until 5 years ago, I had only purchased nothing but used cars. As my family grew, I knew I wouldn’t have been able to fix things in a parking lot or on the side of the road anymore, but I still have my multi-tool just in case something happens to the cars.
