I'll be so excited if my team wins.

If birds didn't have wings, they couldn't fly.

Dialogue: Survival

If there was a storm, I would camp in a cave.

If I got lost, I would climb a mountain so that I could see a long way.

Imagine you had to survive alone in the mountains for a month. What would you need? What could you do to survive?

I would bring matches so I could light a fire. If I needed water, I would melt snow over the fire.

If I ran out of food, I would look for berries and mushrooms. I might try to catch rabbits or fish!

If I had to survive in the mountains, I would need lots of warm clothes, a sleeping bag and a tent.

What would you do?

All plants and animals are living things made of tiny cells.

We can group them into 'families' that are related. Species that are closely related often look similar.

the cactus family

the cat family

Which of these species would you group together? Why?

Which of these species would you group together? Why?

Which group are not plants?

Different species have adapted to survive in different habitats.

Brown bears and polar bears are very similar. A long time ago, all of them were brown. Then, over thousands of years, some bears moved north and changed color.

Why do you think they changed color?

How have these species adapted to survive?

Well done!

Goodbye!

If I ...

... I would ...... I could ... ... I might ...

In English conditionals, people say both:

If I was ...

If I were ...

This is the older form. It is better to use this when you're writing.

In modern spoken English, you will hear this too.

If I ...

... I would ...... I could ... ... I might ...

If I ...

... I would ...... I could ... ... I might ...

Mushrooms are not plants! They get energy from the earth or trees, not from the sun.
