Who is Simone Biles

What is gymnastics?

Gymnastics is a type of sport that includes physical exercises requiring balance, strength, flexibility, agility, coordination, artistry and endurance. The movements involved in gymnastics contribute to the development of the arms, legs, shoulders, back, chest, and abdominal muscle groups. Gymnastics evolved from exercises used by the ancient Greeks that included skills for mounting and dismounting a horse, and from circus performance skills.

Her life

Biles was born in Columbus, Ohio, the third of four siblings. Her birth mother, Shanon Biles, was unable to care for the children, so all four went in and out of foster care. In 2000, Biles' maternal grandfather, Ron Biles and his wife, Nellie Cayetano Biles, began caring temporarily for Shanon's children, after learning that they were in foster care. In 2003, the couple formally adopted Simone and her younger sister Adria. Biles first tried gymnastics at age 6 during a day-care field trip. The instructors suggested she continue with the sport, and Biles soon enrolled in an optional training program at Bannon's Gymnastics. She began training with coach Aimee Boorman at age 8. In 2012, Biles switched from public school to home schooling, allowing her to train about 20 to 32 hours a week.

Trampolines gymnastics

Trampoline gymnastics is a competitive Olympic sport in which athletes perform acrobatics while bouncing on a trampoline. There are 4 events: trampoline, synchronised trampoline, double mini trampoline and tumbling.

The Paris Olympics were her moment to shine, after returning to the profissional gymnastics world in 2023. She went home with 3 golds and 1 silver medal. Biles submitted a new skill for the code of points for the uneven bars, a Weiler kip with 1.5 pirouette, which would make her the only female gymnast to have a skill named on every apparatus. She ultimately did not compete the skill.

  • 2 on the floor (Biles I and Biles II)
  • 2 on the valut (Biles I and Biles II)
  • 1 on the balance beam (Biles)

The Rio Olympics were Biles first olympics. She was considered one of the great highlights, with great achievements in both individual and team events. She has reached the podium five times, with four gold medals (team, vault, floor and individual all-around) and one bronze (Olympic balance beam).

Rio Olympics

At the Tokyo Olympics, held in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Biles finished on the podium in the team (silver) and on the balance beam (bronze). Despite being one of the best gymnasts in the world in the competition, she withdrew from competing in some events after a medical and psychological evaluation, including the individual all-around final, to look after her emotional and physical well-being.
