An apostrophe has two main distinct uses:

1. Possession: belongs to ... - add apostrophe s to singular nouns. - add s apostrophe to plural nouns. - add apostrophe to nouns that end in s if the possessive form is not pronounced with an extra "s". 2. Contraction: a shortened form of a word or phrase - Remove one letter or more and add an apostrophe in the same spot.
