How to search for and use journals at BUW?

How to search?
Simple search from the main website

Entrance to the catalogue on the main website

The catalogue provides information on books, journals and other resources at BUW and most of the faculty libraries.

Enter the term you are looking for and click ‘Search’

Looking for a journal article? Search by the title of the journal, find the relevant year/number and the article within it.

The results will give you a list of items meeting your search criteria

Click on a title to check the availability and location of the journal you are looking for

On the catalogue site select Journal Search

Type the title or ISSN and click on the magnifying glass

You can also browse titles of journals by category

Click on the title to check the location and availability of the journal you are looking for

How to use journals?

Journals from Magazyn (Closed Stacks) can be ordered to Czytelnia (Reading Room) only

In Locations you will see the list of all copies

This copy is in Magazyn (Closed Stacks)

This copy is in Wolny Dostęp (Open Stacks)

These copies are located in the UW faculty libraries Check the BUW website for the location of the particular library On that library's website, check their opening hours and rules

All copies have the status Na miejscu (On site) - they can only be used in the library!

Closed Stacks (PL: Magazyn)

If you do not see the "Request" button, log in to your account first

Click on "Request"

Note! The year/volume/issue you're looking for is not on the items list? Check how to request it!

This copy can be requested to the Reading Room only

Select the Pickup Location: BUW Czytelnia and Send request:

Information about this request will appear in the Requests tab

When the status changes to "REQUEST. On Hold Shelf", you'll get an email and you can go to the Reading Room and use the requested journal there

The journal is awaiting pick-up until the date indicated on your account

If the year/volume/issue you are looking for is not on the list of items, please use the option Request other issue

Enter the year/volume/number you are looking for in the Description field. Make sure it is available in the library by checking in Holdings (view more option). Select BUW Czytelnia (Reading Room) as the pickup location of the journal or, if the journal was published between 1801 and 1918: BUW Czytelnia Gabinetu Zbiorów XIX wieku (19th Century Publications Department Reading Room).

Open Stacks (PL: Wolny Dostęp)

Look for these copies in the Open Stacks in the appropriate subject area

Determine the correct subject area and bookshelf in the Open Stacks

Check the list of titles on the information panel on the bookshelf

Find the title and number of the journal on the appropriate shelf, you can use it anywhere in the Library

Use BUW Plans to find the correct subject area and shelf!

Reading Room (PL: Czytelnia)

The Reading room is open from Monday to Saturday from 9 am to 9 pm

Here you can use:

  • books and journals requested from the Closed Stacks (Magazyn)
  • microfilms and microfiche
  • CDs/DVDs and films from the Watch Docs collection
  • doctoral theses from the UW Repository
  • free scanner

Request type

  • Request option in the online catalogue,
  • Request option in the Digitised Card Catalogues.
Request procedure
  • requests placed from Monday to Saturday by 8 pm are delivered the same day,
  • requests placed from Monday to Friday after 8 pm are processed the following day,
  • requests placed on Saturdays after 8 pm and on Sundays are processed on Monday.
Delivery time
  • from 30 min. to 1 hour
