LET'S PLAY

You can usually find me alone at the trunk of a large tree. In these trees not only do I lookfor food, such as insect larvae living in dead wood, but I also build my nest here (a hole of about 8cm diameter). I am black with white spots. I have a white face with a black head and a red neck (males only). I have a red spot on the bottom of my belly, at the tip of my tail. My legs and tail are short, so I can easily grab onto the trees I climb them up in search of food. My beak isstrong and pointed because I use it to poke holes in trees. When I fly from one tree to another, I do so in a wave-like manner. You have probably heard my singing or my drumming on dead tree trunks.
