It Wasn't Always This Narrow

In the early 1900s, the beam was wider and used mainly for walking and simple dance moves.Over time, gymnasts started incorporating flips, leaps, and turns, making the event more acrobatic.

It Wasn't Always This Narrow

Some of the hardest moves include:The Biles – a double-twisting double back dismount. The Onodi – a back handspring with a half twist into a front handspring. The Korbut Flip – a backflip performed from a standing position, first done by Olga Korbut in 1972.

Balance Beam

The beam is 5 meters long, 10 cm wide, and 1.25 meters high. Despite looking like wood, modern beams are covered with suede or leather-like materials for better grip. Because the beam is only 10 cm wide, gymnasts need perfect balance, precision, and mental strength. Even a slight misstep can lead to a fall. If a gymnast falls off the beam, they lose 1.0 point.
