Rings
The rings are suspended 2.8 meters above the ground and are spaced 50 cm apart. The rings are made of wood or fiberglass, providing a firm but slightly flexible grip. Unlike other events, the rings aren’t fixed, making them one of the hardest apparatuses to control. The rings demand extraordinary upper body and core strength. Gymnasts must perform static holds, strength moves, and controlled swings without shaking.
The Most Difficult Skills
Some of the hardest moves include:The Iron Cross – holding the body in a “T” position with arms straight out.The Maltese – a horizontal position where the body is held parallel to the ground. The Victorian – similar to the Maltese but with the body held even lower. The Nakayama – a skill where the gymnast swings into a handstand. The Azarian Cross – a transition into the Iron Cross from a swing.
No Swinging Allowed!
Unlike the high bar or parallel bars, gymnasts must not use momentum to aid their movements.Every motion must be controlled, making even the simplest elements incredibly hard. The constant stabilization of the rings puts enormous pressure on the shoulders, biceps, and core. Gymnasts train with weighted exercises and isometric holds to develop the necessary strength.
