JUDO MAT AREA
The standard competition judo mat area (tatami) measures 14x14m, though the size can vary for training reasons The surface is covered with tatami mats, traditionally made from rice straw. Nowadays it is often synthetic. The surface is non-slip to prevent accidental slips during gripping or throwing techniques.
Border
There is a 1-meter border around the edges; stepping out results in a deduction.
Floor
The floor area is a square of 12x12 meters. The gymnastics floor is not just a flat surface – it contains springs or a foam and plywood system underneath. This provides extra bounce, helping gymnasts generate height for their flips and land safely.
Men vs. Women Routines
Men’s floor routines focus more on powerful tumbling and acrobatics, with no music.Women’s floor routines combine tumbling, dance, and expressive choreography, performed to music.
The Most Difficult Skills
Some of the hardest moves include:The Biles (I & II) – A triple-twisting double backflip and a double backflip with two twists in layout. The Dos Santos – A double Arabian (a half-twist into two backflips). The Silivas – A double backflip with two twists in a tucked position. The Thomas Flair – A floor move inspired by pommel horse swings.
Tumbling Requires Massive Power
Some gymnasts reach speeds of 40 km/h during their tumbling passes. The height of their flips can be over 3 meters above the ground.
