5.2 Workflow of Environment and Assets for Animation
Reviewing Workflow ProcessArtist Director 3D Modeler
Today's Agenda
Once script is developed Artistic Director steps in
Before artists even learn about a project, it has already gone through a creative process called concept development. This is where a story is developed in written form and basic ideas are generated about who the characters will be, what settings the film requires, and which moments are going to be particularly impactful.
What is the animation about?
Concept Development
Determines styles, budget, making the animations look good

If you're feeling brave, share it to the class Padlet!
You will need to complete this activity on a blank sheet of paper (or the digital drawing program of your choice). Choose a simple character that you want to draw. Draw a rough sketch of the character facing forward on the left of the sheet. Using the image above as a reference, create a model sheet for your character from different angles. T he sketches do not have to be as detailed as the picture above. Take a picture of your work.

"Backstory"
- What do they do for a living?
- Where do they live?
- What sorts of activities do they enjoy participating in?
- What kinds of dreams and goals might they have in life?
characters are usually the most recognizable part of a movie
PRocess of creating a character
The first step in character design is a thorough sketch. Character designers also might develop maquettes for their character designs. Maquettes are clay sculptures that show a character in 3D, which allows the art director to see a character design from multiple angles.
Process of creating a character
Why are model sheets so important?
Model Sheet
Process of creating a character
- Blocking
- Detailing
- Texturing
Developing a model of a character goes through these stages:
Process of creating a character
Model Sheets often use T pose or A pose
Process of creating a character
Which character is in A pose?
Review:
Rigging is a process of placing joints within the character. Animators use this to make the character move
T and A pose make it easier for Rigging
Process of creating a character
Skinning tells certain parts of the character mesh to move with particular joints. For example, a properly skinned model will move the elbow portion of the character when the elbow joint moves.
Process of creating a character
Follow the teacher over to Blender for a brief discussion/demonstration of rigging in blender.

A good animation has 24 frames per second.
Frozen took 3 years to complete & had 100 animators working o the film!
