Referees and Technology
A referee stands near the center of the mat to enforce rules and ensure fair play, while judges positioned around the mat provide additional oversight. To enhance scoring accuracy, electronic sensors embedded in the athletes’ protective gear detect the force and location of impacts. This combination of human supervision and technology ensures an objective and transparent scoring process.
Athletes
Taekwondo athletes are highly skilled and trained to perform a combination of speed, power, and precision. They wear protective gear, including a helmet, chest guard, arm and shin guards, and a mouthguard, to ensure safety during the match. Each athlete must demonstrate discipline, strategy, and agility to outmaneuver their opponent while adhering to the sport's strict rules and etiquette.
Competition Area
The taekwondo competition mat is octagonal, measuring 8 meters in diameter. This shape ensures fairness by eliminating corners where athletes could get trapped. Surrounding the mat is a 1-meter-wide safety zone that provides extra space to reduce the risk of injury when athletes step out or fall. The mat is made from high-density, shock-absorbing foam designed to reduce the impact of falls, kicks, and sweeps.
