“Made up of 115 islands, The Seychelles offers a rich line-up of otherworldly experiences. I sink my toes into the dazzling white sand and sigh. This is bliss. No matter what island I visit in The Seychelles, I find a jaw-dropping beach that is better than the last. But this remote archipelago in the Indian Ocean offers much more than seductive Robinson Crusoe moments: there are rare black parrots to search for, giant tortoises and delicious Creole curries to taste under star-spangled skies.” - Angelina Villa

Stargaze on Desroches Island
Dubai
Surrounded by sparkling azure waters and pristine sands, the far-flung Desroches Island was once home to a coconut farm and not much else. These days, you can stay at a sustainably-minded Four Seasons Resort and visit The Island Conservation Society’s giant tortoise sanctuary. “I hiked to waterfalls, spotting Mauritian fruit bats dangling like mangoes in the trees. I sipped vanilla tea on the veranda of a plantation house. I saw Hindu temples and Christian shrines, fluttering with flags and draped in garlands. Later, I cycled along the casuarina-fringed coast, stopping to watch an elderly gentleman weave bamboo into fishing baskets while a clutch of customers sheltered in the shade of a twisted banyan tree waiting for the fishermen to return.” - Rachel Truman

Eat the streets
Dubai
Mauritius’ food is a mix of Indian, Creole and Chinese traditions with a splash of French finesse. You’ll find plenty of street-food stands by the beaches, many of them doing a brisk trade in dholl puri (flatbreads stuffed with ground yellow split peas), gateaux piments (fried chilli cakes), boulettes (dumplings) and hunks of island-grown pineapple laced with tamarind and chilli salt. And don’t miss the markets in Port Louis and Mahebourg.

Hike in Black-River Gorges National Park
Dubai
Follow one of the trails that thread through the wilderness of the island’s south-west. In Black River Gorges National Park you’ll find Mauritius’ largest protected forest, home to some of its last remaining endemic old-growth ebony forest. The park is a primary habitat for some of the country’s most threatened native birdlife (Mauritian kestrel, pink pigeon, echo parakeet).

Explore beyond the beaches on a bike ride through the Chamarel highlands. Chamarel Waterfall, the island’s tallest single-drop waterfall, and the Seven Coloured Earths, a landscape of surreally colourful volcanic dunes, are just two of its beauty spots. Stop for a tour (and tasting) of single-estate rum at the Rhumerie de Chamarel, one of only a small clutch of distilleries that grows its own sugar cane.

“From the painterly pink sunsets to the impossibly azure waters, The Maldives, I discover, is a land of enigmatic colour. Many of the low lying islands are each home to a different luxury hotel but, no matter where I’ve stayed, a highlight has been the direct contact with a kaleidoscopic world of nature. Flinging off my shoes is mandatory once I arrive, then it’s time to swim in the turquoise sea. As the sun dips, a sunset cruise on a dhoni boat, accompanied by pods of skittish dolphins, is a memory-making moment.” - Angelina Villa
