INDEX

Diatoms pump

This video is an interesting way to understand the role of diatoms in the ocean and the biological carbon pump which takes carbon from the atmosphere through photosynthesis and brings it into the depths of the sea as organic matter. It is an endless and essential cycle.

INDEX

SandY beaches

Quartz is a mineral that contains Silica. There are very resisting forms of quartz in glass for example. Sang grains are also made of quartz, but since their size is smaller, they can be more easily dissolved than resisting forms like glass bottles. How would sand grains be a source of silica for diatoms ?

INDEX

Picocyanobacteria

This video deals with very small organisms, pycocyanobacteria. Here they analyse how the pycocyanobacterium Synechococcus uses silicon to make whether an external skeleton or a shield made of silica. The research is not very advanced yet and there are still many questions without answers about the functionning of pycocyanobacteria, even thought we know they have a major role on the oxygen production through photosynthesis.

INDEX

Sponge skeleton

This video is a presentation of sponges and their skeleton, an important source of silicon that helps us understand its cycle. In the video, we learn that sponges live in symbiosis with other species. Furthemore, when they die, sponges release silicon to the ocean floor. You will see nice drawings that make it easy to understand. Enjoy ;)

INDEX

Silica Export

This video is about the impact of climate change (as well as one of its consequences, ocean acidification) on the cycle of life of diatoms. As diatoms are keys to the Silica cycle, it shows how Climate Change may impact silica export in ecosystems.

INDEX

Silica FRACTIONATION

Diatoms are amazing species. Thanks to their properties, their composition, scientists can reconstruct past climate over the last 20,000 years. Incredible, isn't it ? For that, they use isotopes and study a process called fractionation.

INDEX

Rhizaria

This video introduces Rhizaria and their role in silica production/"storage" in the depths of ocean. Diatoms are not the only ones involved in the Silica cycle, even if they are the most common ones.

INDEX

Arctic river

This video is about the input of silica in the ocean by arctic rivers.

INDEX

Ice sheets

This video is about the presence of silica in ice sheets and the possible consequences of the ice melting on the silicon cycle. It is explained with drawings to make it easily understandable.

This presentation results from a collaborative project between Master's degree students from the IUEM (Institut Universitaire Européen de la Mer), studying chemistry of the marine environment and high school students, from Lycée La Pérouse Kerichen, studying Biology in English as part of the European Section. The oldest ones had to explain to their younger partners what they learned from scientific articles about Diatoms and the Silica cycle, in a simplified way.
