Tatanka's Last Riddle
Start
On Saturday evening Kaya Red Hawk received the sad news that her grandpa Tatanka had died. At the age of 87, his strength had left his old and tired body. To Kaya's surprise, Tatanka had left a letter for her...
My beloved Kaya, when you are reading this, Grandpa is in a peaceful place with the Great Manitou. Don’t grieve too much for me, because we will see each other again. Since I know how much you loved solving my riddles as a little girl, I now have another one for you. On the attic* of my house, there is a large chest filled with personal items from my life. It will tell you a lot about your ancestors. I’ve locked the chest with a code so that only you can open it. In my house, you’ll find a part of the code in each room. However, every door is protected by a riddle that you must solve first. I’m sure you’ll manage to open my chest - and discover a few surprises along the way. I'm looking forward to our next meeting! With lots of love from your Grandpa Tatanka

Alright Grandpa, I am here to solve your riddles!
The front door is locked already. Grandpa wasn't joking!
Type in the code to enter the house.
I'm in the hallway. I start with the two rooms on the left, then the two on the right. After that I take the last one to go upstairs.

I'm sure that you're wondering how they shall help you to open the chest on the attic. Let me give you the following hint: The lock on the chest has four numbers and you also have have code elements 1, 2, 3 and 4. Look at them and arrange them in the right way. Remember: the lock is a vertical one. Use your brain, my smart Kaya. You're almost there! Grandpa Tatanka

Video about the Crazy Horse Memorial
Start again!
Look at the four code elements. You have:- a hat (number one)
- a carpet (number two)
- a head of a moose (number three)
- a piece of clothing (number four)
Which one could be at the top of the combination lock? And which at the bottom? And where could the other two elements be placed?
I have no clue what this logo stands for, but Grandpa Tatanka loved to make his own clothes. This unfinished piece of clothing must be code element number four!
Okay, so the first part of the code is his hat? Or something related to it? Strange... But I'll keep it in mind.
The Crazy Horse Memorial is a huge monument in the United States that has been under construction since 1948. It is being carved into a mountain in South Dakota to honor Crazy Horse. When finished, it will be the largest mountain monument in the world, even bigger than Mount Rushmore. The project is taking so long because it is only funded by donations and visitor fees. Also, carving a mountain is very difficult and takes a lot of time. So far, only Crazy Horse’s head is complete, and it may take many more decades to finish the entire monument. The memorial is an important reminder of the history and culture of Native Americans and the need to respect and preserve it.
Poor moose, I wonder where you lived. I'm really surprised but I won't forget you. You are code element number three!
The Battle of Little Bighorn took place on June 25-26, 1876, near the Little Bighorn River in Montana. It was fought between the U.S. Army, led by General George Custer, and a group of Native American tribes, including the Lakota Sioux and the Cheyenne, led by Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull, and other leaders. The U.S. government wanted Native Americans to move onto reservations so settlers could take their land. However, the tribes resisted, and tensions grew. At Little Bighorn, Custer and his soldiers attacked a large Native American camp, but they underestimated the number of warriors. The Native Americans, fighting to protect their land and way of life, overwhelmed the U.S. Army. Custer and all 210 of his men were killed in the battle. The victory was a major success for the Native Americans, but it didn’t last. The U.S. government responded with more soldiers and eventually forced most tribes onto reservations. The battle is remembered as a symbol of Native American resistance*.

This is a picture of my father who was a Lakota, too. He was a very kind person and a strong leader at the same time. And he was a cousin of the most famous Lakota:Crazy Horse. You should know more about him.
This big carpet is code element number two, Grandpa. Hopefully the surprise in the chest will be similarly big! I remember how often I told Grandpa that carpets belong on the floor, not on a wall...
Have you found Tatanka's second letter already?
I want to leave this necklace to you, Kaya. It was a gift by my mother when I became a man, and now I want to give it to you, my grandchild. I'd be happy to see it around your neck the next time we meet.
Crazy Horse was a famous leader of the Lakota Sioux, a Native American tribe. He was born around 1840 and grew up learning the traditions and culture of his people. Crazy Horse became a brave warrior and fought to protect his tribe's land and way of life as settlers moved west and the U.S. government tried to take Native lands. One of his most famous battles was the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876, where he and other Native leaders, like Sitting Bull, defeated General Custer and his soldiers. This victory made Crazy Horse a symbol of resistance against oppression. Despite his efforts, Crazy Horse and his people faced great hardships. In 1877, he was captured and tragically killed while in custody*. Today, he is remembered as a hero who fought for the freedom and rights of Native Americans.
