Dating and Going steady
The appearance of a new age group changed the importance young people gave to friendship. Friends (buddies, pals, mates, girlfriends) became more important than family life. Teenagers had to have a gang. It was also commonplace to date a girl or a boy, to have a steady girlfriend or boyfriend.Prom balls were occasions to meet your future spouse Some films have turned the period into a romantic era, but actually it was full of social coded behaviour, and generally, girls were the ones who suffered the most: unwanted pregnancies, unfaithful husbands etc

CHAPTER XVII A week passed, and no news arrived of Mr. Rochester: ten days, and still he did not come. Mrs. Fairfax said she should not be surprised if he were to go straight from the Leas to London, and thence to the Continent, and not show his face again at Thornfield for a year to come; he had not unfrequently quitted it in a manner quite as abrupt and unexpected. When I heard this, I was beginning to feel a strange chill and failing at the heart. I was actually permitting myself to experience a sickening sense of disappointment; but rallying my wits, and recollecting my principles, I at once called my sensations to order; and it was wonderful how I got over the temporary blunder—how I cleared up the mistake of supposing Mr. Rochester’s movements a matter in which I had any cause to take a vital interest. Not that I humbled myself by a slavish notion of inferiority: on the contrary, I just said— “You have nothing to do with the master of Thornfield, further than to receive the salary he gives you for teaching his protégée, and to be grateful for such respectful and kind treatment as, if you do your duty, you have a right to expect at his hands. Be sure that is the only tie he seriously acknowledges between you and him; so don’t make him the object of your fine feelings, your raptures, agonies, and so forth. He is not of your order: keep to your caste, and be too self-respecting to lavish the love of the whole heart, soul, and strength, where such a gift is not wanted and would be despised.”
I went on with my day’s business tranquilly; but ever and anon vague suggestions kept wandering across my brain of reasons why I should quit Thornfield; and I kept involuntarily framing advertisements and pondering conjectures about new situations: these thoughts I did not think to check; they might germinate and bear fruit if they could. Mr. Rochester had been absent upwards of a fortnight, when the post brought Mrs. Fairfax a letter. “It is from the master,” said she, as she looked at the direction. “Now I suppose we shall know whether we are to expect his return or not.” And while she broke the seal and perused the document, I went on taking my coffee (we were at breakfast): it was hot, and I attributed to that circumstance a fiery glow which suddenly rose to my face. Why my hand shook, and why I involuntarily spilt half the contents of my cup into my saucer, I did not choose to consider. “Well, I sometimes think we are too quiet; but we run a chance of being busy enough now: for a little while at least,” said Mrs. Fairfax, still holding the note before her spectacles.
Ere I permitted myself to request an explanation, I tied the string of Adèle’s pinafore, which happened to be loose: having helped her also to another bun and refilled her mug with milk, I said, nonchalantly— “Mr. Rochester is not likely to return soon, I suppose?” “Indeed he is—in three days, he says: that will be next Thursday; and not alone either. I don’t know how many of the fine people at the Leas are coming with him: he sends directions for all the best bedrooms to be prepared; and the library and drawing-rooms are to be cleaned out; I am to get more kitchen hands from the George Inn, at Millcote, and from wherever else I can; and the ladies will bring their maids and the gentlemen their valets: so we shall have a full house of it.” And Mrs. Fairfax swallowed her breakfast and hastened away to commence operations. A Red, Red Rose By Robert Burns 1794 O my Luve is like a red, red rose That’s newly sprung in June; O my Luve is like the melody That’s sweetly played in tune. So fair art thou, my bonnie lass, So deep in luve am I; And I will luve thee still, my dear, Till a’ the seas gang dry. Till a’ the seas gang dry, my dear, And the rocks melt wi’ the sun; I will love thee still, my dear, While the sands o’ life shall run. .
And fare thee weel, my only luve! And fare thee weel awhile! And I will come again, my luve, Though it were ten thousand mile
Portrait of Burns by Alexander Nasmyth, 1787, Scottish National Portrait Gallery. Born 25 January 1759 Alloway, Ayrshire, Scotland Died 21 July 1796 (aged 37) Dumfries, Scotland
‘Love and Friendship’ by Emily Brontë 1846 Love is like the wild rose-briar; Friendship like the holly-tree. The holly is dark when the rose-briar blooms, But which will bloom most constantly? The wild rose-briar is sweet in spring, Its summer blossoms scent the air; Yet wait till winter comes again, And who will call the wild-briar fair? Then, scorn the silly rose-wreath now, And deck thee with the holly’s sheen, That, when December blights thy brow, He still may leave thy garland green.

19 th century. The century of romanticism. Tortured feelings and hopeless love. Women didn’t have much to say!
Love, romance, friendship are associated with female emotions whereas men are not supposed to yield to these feelings. We can regret that.It has been a source of uneasiness and unhappiness for men because they are not supposed to show soft emotions. When men are in love, they have to conquer, woe and win eventually. (medieval courtly love) Except during the romantic period when male writers expressed their love without any restraint, but it was generally a hopeless, painful love. The display of feelings have always been considered as a proof of weakness in men by other men. This patriarcal way of regarding feelings has denied men the possibility to show their emotional side.
Love is a very strong feeling, a source of endless emotions, which can be either positive or negative. Love can lead someone to bliss or total despair. Love can be obsessive and devastating / crushing/ destructive but it can also be a source of joy and fulfilment., of never-ending happiness

18th century https://www.womenshistory.org/articles/history-romance Men and women (but more men) started to feel more inclined to free love. Hence the character of the Rake (a womaniser) represented by Casanova or Don Juan. Novels like les liaisons dangereuses de Choderlos de Laclos However women still had to find a husband, rich preferably.
The appearance of a new age group changed the importance young people gave to friendship. Friends (buddies, pals, mates, girlfriends) became more important than family life. Teenagers had to have a gang. It was also commonplace to date a girl or a boy to have a steady girlfriend or boyfriend. The expression: to go steady meant that the couple had been going out together for quite a while (was in a serious relationship ) and might get engaged. Of course, girls wanted to go steady because getting married was what was expected and the tradition whereas boys wanted more adventures and being considered a womaniser by one’s peers was highly respected. (illustrated in the film Grease )
Both feelings are primordial for humans. These relationships show how the human soul functions. Some people are comfortable being on their own but most of us enjoy the proximity of other human beings. From an early age, humans have enjoyed sharing with others, laughing with others but also having tender gestures like kissing, hugging or caressing. These contacts are beneficial to humans' psychological balance.

(illustrated in the film Grease) Dating behaviours in the ’60s had to be considered good etiquette. if you were a girl, your parents would expect your date to be a polite young man who sought permission to ask you out in your teens. A boy should open the door for his date. He was also expected to pay for movie tickets, dinner or any refreshments. Women were to refrain from kissing the boy on the first date, regardless of how much they liked him.

Love seems to be more important to humans than friendship. Probably because literature and films have used love situations many, many times. We can quote the filmreleased in 1970 "love Story" which was an instant box-office match.
Love, love, love Love, love, love Love, love, love There's nothin' you can do that can't be done Nothin' you can sing that can't be sung Nothin' you can say, but you can learn how to play the game It's easy Nothin' you can make that can't be made No one you can save that can't be saved Nothin' you can do, but you can learn how to be you in time It's easy All you need is love All you need is love All you need is love, love Love is all you need All you need is love All you need is love All you need is love, love Love is all you need There's nothin' you can know that isn't known Nothin' you can see that isn't shown There's nowhere you can be that isn't where you're meant to be It's easy All you need is love All you need is love All you need is love, love Love is all you need All you need is love (all together now) All you need is love (everybody) All you need is love, love Love is all you need Love is all you need (love is all you need)

Their songs were great inspiration for many teenagers. These songs have an exhilarating quality that makes us feel good
Friendship offers almost the same kind of emotions as love. Friendship is a challenge because it needs generosity and understanding whereas love is often slightly selfish. Friends have the same importance to someone as a lover. Friendships can last for ever and it is an extremely rewarding relationship for both friends.
Romance is associated with love, it’s the expectation of great excitement, great pleasure like seeing the person or encountering this person for the second time. There is the anticipation a pleasing moment. Most novels depicting love feelings display romance as describing romance is easier than describing love. Love at first sight is also a common literary device to introduce more passion in a novel.Romance def: a feeling of excitement and mystery associated with love.
It’s easy to mistake friendship for love especially when the boundaries are blurred because of the intimacy between the 2 protagonists.

Betrayal is extremely painful in both cases. A bretayed friend is as desperate as a betrayed lover, even though the betrayals are not similar. However, it is often about lies and deceit in both cases. The death of the loved person is a tragedy.
Love definitely exists outside the bonds of marriage; however Christian and patriarchal societies impose wedlock on both lovers. Love outside marriage is considered as sinful and the stain rests upon the woman.
