The Half Court Line
The line divides the court into two halves. It separates the offensive and defensive sides for each team. Teams must advance the ball past this line within a specific time frame (e.g., eight seconds in professional basketball). Once crossed, they cannot return to the backcourt (backcourt violation).
The Free Throw Line
A line 15 feet (4.57 meters) from the backboard at the top of the key. This is where players take free throws after being fouled. The shooter must remain behind the line until the ball touches the rim.
The 3-Point Line
An arc surrounding the basket at a distance of 22 feet (6.7 meters) in most professional courts. The player’s feet must be behind the line when the shot is released to earn 3 points.
The Basket/ Hoop
Located at both ends of the court, it consists of a rim (usually 10 feet/3.05 meters high) and a backboard. The objective of the game is to score points by shooting the ball through the hoop.
The Basket/ Hoop
Located at both ends of the court, it consists of a circular metal rim with a net attached to a backboard. It is located 10 feet (3.05 meters) above the ground. The objective of the game is to score points by shooting the ball through the hoop. Players cannot touch the hoop or interfere with the ball while it is in the basket or on the rim.
The Center Circle
Located at the middle of the court. This is where the game begins with a jump ball. Only one player from each team can contest the jump ball.
The Sidelines and Baselines
The outer boundaries of the court. The sidelines run the length of the court, and the baselines run the width at each end near the hoops. Stepping out of bounds results in a turnover.
The Free-Throw Circle
The Free-Throw Circle is the circular area surrounding the Free-Throw Line. This circle marks the area where the shooter must stand when taking a free throw. Only the shooter is allowed inside the circle during a free throw attempt. The shooter must remain within the circle until the ball touches the rim or backboard. Other players are not allowed to enter the circle until the ball has been released by the shooter.
The Key/ Paint
The rectangular area below the basket, also called the "paint" or "lane," often highlighted in a different color. This area is critical for both offense and defense. It includes the Free-Throw Circle and the Free-Throw Line. Players cannot stay in this area for more than three seconds unless actively moving (offensive players).
