Foreign Bodies

A foreign body is an item that is lodges inside the body that is not natural (on object originating outside the body of an organism)

Foreign Bodies: Key Symptoms

1. Pain or discomfort 2. Hearing loss (if it is occluding the ear) 3. Feeling of fullness

Foreign Bodies: Actions

Please note: this is for guidance only, and you should always rely on your clinical judgement to ensure your patients receive appropriate care and treatment.

1. For most foreign bodies e.g., hearing aid parts, food, small toys, cotton wool – you can have 1 attempt to take it out via microsuction. If this is unsuccessful, refer the patient onwards to their local Walk-in Centre or Accident and Emergency to have it removed. 2. For INSECTS and BUTTON BATTERIES – never attempt microsuction. Advise the patient to go to Accident and Emergency as soon as possible to see an ENT specialist. 3. If you are unsure of what you are looking at and need a second opinion – send it to Tympahealth for a remote review.

Within normal limits of hearing

Typically, individuals suffering from a foreign body in their ear unless it is fully occluding the ear canal may not experience difficulties with their hearing. Consequently, their hearing check results are likely to fall within the range considered normal (with points above the 25dB threshold).
