FAQ's for Middle School Music

01

I am brand new to music. Is it still OK to sign up for band/choir/orchestra? YES! If you have never been in music before, 6th grade is the perfect time to start! I am an athlete and I hope to play sports in middle school. Can I still be in band/choir/orchestra? YES! Our music groups rehearse during the school day and they are graded classes. The only after school commitments are the evening concerts (3 or 4 per year). What about falling behind in school work and needing a study hall instead of a music class? Study hall can be an attractive elective to take to stay on top of core classwork, and every student has different academic needs, but music students are smart students! Many learned skills in a music group directly transfer to math abstract and english language arts reading skills. Sign up for music to try something new, to make some lifelong friends, and have fun! Can I play guitar or piano in any of your music groups? Guitar and piano are not instruments that are played in our ensembles that rehearse during the day. Can I do two music ensembles? If you want to sign up for two music classes, we recommend doubling in band/choir or strings/choir. This will allow you to focus on learning one instrument in addition to choir. Learning two instruments at once is not recommended. If you double on an instrument and choir, also know that you will be learning the content of a 36-week course in the span of 18-weeks. How should I obtain an instrument? Once students figure out which instrument they will play at our fittings, families will receive information about how to obtain an instrument. Our staff recommends renting an instrument, which entails a small monthly fee. Click here to learn more about rentals for band.

How much of a time commitment are these ensembles? Students meet daily during class. There are minimal after school commitments, with a few evening concerts each year.

If you are a responsible with practicing and well organized, you may be able to do two ensembles. These "doublers" alternate which days they go to each ensemble. Since these students are doing two ensembles in half the class time, it requires great organization and responsibility. Contact your prospective teachers with tips about how you can be a successful doubler. How should I obtain an instrument? Once students figure out which instrument they will play at our fittings, families will receive information about how to obtain an instrument. Strings Informational Meeting and Rental Info

The strings teachers will hold an informational parent meeting for all students interested in joining orchestra (strings) in 6th grade. At this meeting, we will provide information on selecting and obtaining an instrument, items needed for classroom instruction, and how you can enhance your child’s musical experience. We will also measure your child for the correct instrument size based on their height and arm length. If you wish to begin the process of acquiring an instrument, we will have flyers for recommended music stores available as well and information about their rental plans. Please do not obtain an instrument until after the informational meeting or speaking with the strings teacher from your child's building. We recommend renting from the Loft Violin Shop; click here to learn more. The informational meetings will be held as follows: March 18th in the Olentangy Orange High School Theater at 7:00 p.m. March 20th in the Liberty High School Theater at 7:00 p.m. Students and parents may attend whichever meeting works best for their schedule, however your individual strings teacher may not be in attendance for both. It is helpful if you can bring your child to this meeting. However, parents may come alone if necessary.

Band Rental Information

We recommend these vendors, to rent an instrument: Music and Arts

Rettig Music

Kincaid Music

The quality of a beginning student's instrument has a huge impact on their success and development as a performer. Learning to play a musical instrument well is tough enough with struggling to play on an instrument that is poorly manufactured. With huge number of instruments available and the expertise required to choose an instrument that offers both value and quality, we recommend that students rent from our approved vendors to ensure that students are set up for success.
