Hammer & Discus Throw

The facility for discus and hammer is a ring in wwhich the athletes accelerate either the hammer or the discus. The ring is 2,5m wide for disus throw as the athlete has to make severeal steps. For hammer throw the ring is only 2,135m (7 ft.). For these events the ring is tightend by another ring. Because both items get pretty fast, it is dangerous if the item is thrown in the wrong direction. To prevent this there is a huge net which covers all sides of teh ring except for the one directed to the field.

Pole Vault

The pole vaulting facility consists of a tartan runway and a box in which the pole is positioned to take-off. The main object is formed by two vaulting stands and a bar resting on the vaulting stands. The height of the bar is adjustable and will get higher the longer the competition takes. Below the vaulting stands there is a large and soft mat on which the pole vaulters land after jumping over the up-to-6-meter bar.

Sprint & Hurdles (100-110m)

Here is the start of the 100m sprint as well as the 100-110m Hurdles (women and men distance). The athletes start in starting blocks, one in each line. Other than the other track disciplines, every athlete starting at this point is only running in a straight line.

On this distance for men there are 10 hurdles, which are 106,68 cm (42 inches) high and for women the 10 hurdles are 83,82 cm (33 inches) high.

Javelin

For Javelin throw the whole field is used. When the bests athletes throw up to or more than 90 meters, the javelin lands on the opposite side of the field. In the inner curve athletes start running to accelerate the javelin. Other than in other disciplines the athletes often do not use the full start up lane because they get so fast they need space to break in ordner not to breach.

Long Jump & Triple Jump

For Long Jump and Triple Jump a facility next to the sprint track is used. The jumpers of both disciplines land in a sand pit which is approximately 8 meters long. The board from which the jumpers start is 1 to 3 meters in front of the pit. The board provides better power transmission. The black line on the board marks the end of the allowed take of area. For Triple Jump another board is located at least 11 meters before the pit.

Start and Finish Line

400m, 400m Hurdles, 4x400m relay and 800m races start here. However they use different specific lines here. 400m runners have an individual line in each lane so the distance to finish line is identical for everyone, no matter if they run the curve in the inner and outer lanes. The 800m runners use a curved line which is connected over all lanes. The ten hurdles over 400m are 91,44 cm (3 feet) high for men and 76,20 cm (2 feet) high for women.

Finish Line for these disciplines:

  • 100m, 200m, 400m, 4x100m, 4x400m
  • 100/110m Hurdles, 400m Hurldes
  • 800m, 1500m, 5000m, 10000m
  • 3000m Steeplechase
Long Distance Races

The half-marathon and the walking races take place on the roads of Bochum outside of the stadium.

Start 200m and 3000m Steeplechase

The 200m sprinters start here. They run the curve and then the same straight line as the 100m sprinters. They also start in starting blocks. Due to the curved line they do not start in parallel lines - the runners in the outer lines start a few meters before the ones left of them, so everyone runs the same distance. However some prefer the outer lines as the curve tehre is not so tight.3000m Steeplchase races also start here but they use another curved line which is connected over all lanes. Speeplechasers normally do not run regular 400 m rounds as the water pit usually is located in the inner circle. The other obstacles are distributed along the track.

Shot Put

Shot Put takes place in a 2,135m wide ring. The front end is marked by an extra thick board to prevent breaching. The shot lands on the field.

Start 1500m

1500m runners start here as they run 3,75 rounds until the finish line.

High Jump

The High Jump facility is built similar to the Pole Vaulting facility. It consits of two jumping stands and a bar resting on the jumping stands. The height of the bar is adjustable and will get higher the longer the competition takes. Below the vaulting stands there is a large and soft mat on which the high jumpers land. Before take off the high jumpers get started in a quarter circle line.
