3. Hindi

602 million speakers

Originating from the language of Sanskrit, this is the primary language of India, with around half of the population being able to speak it amongst around 120 languages.

4. Spanish

548 million speakers

Similar to Britain, Spain was a large colonizing force that allowed for the spread of the language. With a little over half of the speakers considering it to be their native language. There are several variants of the langauge.

5. French

274.1 million speakers

A merge of Celtic and Latin languages, French is often known as the language of love. However this also was spread through colonization but not quite as much as the British and Spanish.

1. English

1.5 billion speakers

Originating mainly in the United Kingdom, better known as the UK, British colonization and expansion aided the spread of English, which is the most common language.

2. Chinese (Mandarin)

1.1 billion speakers

The majority of Mandarin speakers are from mainland China, which also makes Chinese the largest native-speaking population in the world, while English is often learned by others.
