Jun Young Bang, a 28-year-old Korean who has lived in Hong Kong for 5 years, said he never knew the villain hitting tradition and was shocked to see the ceremony for the first time. Although there are some shamanic rituals in Korea that aim to clean up people’s bad energy as well, as somebody who has never tried such rituals, he found it hard for him to understand why people choose to find comfort through this process, spending their own money on “hitting some paper.”
