Handouts

The trainer has only to search for research papers on the topic and provide them to learners

Tips For The Trainer

  • Use a Chronometer to check the time of the activity. Each step should have a fixed time, otherwise participants lose focus.
  • During the world cafè part, check the behavior of groups, being sure that everyone participates actively. For the shiest participants, ask directly their point of view.
  • The PPT has to be clear and catching. It should focus mainly on data.

Learn Check /Debriefing

At the end of the activity there will be 10 minutes of feedback sharing all together. The trainer should ask participants if they knew ecosystem services, what they think about them and if they ever have thought about how many things nature provides us.

FIrst icebreaker: The trainer divide the participants into 6 groups of 5 people each and give them a piece of paper each group. Every participant has to hide one arm behind their back. They should create all together a paper airplane only with one hand. The trainer gives them 10 minutes. The only group that “loose” is the last one that complete the task. However, the activity is not based on competition but only on having fun. Main activity: After the icebreaker the groups, as they are set, start the activity.

  • Each group has to ask themselves which services they use from nature. The question might seem banal but it is useful for them to understand how many services provided by nature they take advantage of every day.
  • Once the participants have asked themselves this question, they have to make a list and expose them to other groups.
  • Each group has to read aloud the list to others. The group that have enlisted more things “wins” this battle.
  • Then the trainer show them the PPT about ecosystem services and explain them what they are
  • The groups have now to work together to divide all the services they enlisted into the 4 main ES into one poster
Duration: 100 minutes, included icebreaker and evaluation Target: 30 youth 18-30

Tips For The Trainer

Use a Chronometer to check the time of the activity. Each step should have a fixed time, otherwise participants lose focus. During the research part, check the behavior of groups, being sure that everyone participate actively. For the shiest participants, ask directly their point of view.

Icebreaker: The trainer divides participants in peers and ask them to create some figures related to nature with their bodies. The trainer screams (for instance): “Eagle!” and the peers have 10 seconds to create the shape of an eagle with their bodies and so on for six times. Main activity: The trainer divide participants into 6 groups with 5 participants in each. Each group has to create an oral presentation about a best practice related to the impact of nature on well being. They can use their own personal experience or research some of them through the web with their mobile phones. They can also take advantage of the research papers provided by the trainer. They have 60 minutes to research and create an oral presentation to be shown to all of them. The presentation should include the description of the activity, the location and the time, its impact and some scientific date demonstrating this impact. At the end of the research, each group has 5 minutes to present it to their mates as they were the trainers. Duration: 115 minutes, including icebreaker and evaluation Target group: 30 youth aged 18-30

Handouts

The trainer should have studied a little these themes and prepare a PPT showing data of biodiversity loss on economy and health

Session Description

Icebreaker: The trainer divides the group into two groups of 15 people each. Each group participant has to say three things about themselves: two truths and one falsehood. The group has to guess which one is false. Main activity: The groups of the icebreaker now have to work on the main activity. One group will work on the theme “biodiversity loss impact on the economy” the other one on the theme “biodiversity loss impact on human health”. The groups will use the methodology of world cafè discussing which impacts a biodiversity loss can have on these themes (health or economy). The trainer should ask them 3 questions with the formula “What if” (f.i. “What if bees disappear?”; “What if desertification increases?”...). The “economy” group has to think about the consequences of these scenarios on the economy and the other one on human health. At the end the two groups show the others what they thought. The trainer will show them a PPT with data about biodiversity loss on economy and on health. Duration: 90 minutes, included icebreaker and evaluation Target group: 30 youth aged 18-30

NFE Methods

  • World cafè

Learn Check /Debriefing

At the end the trainer asks participants if they could have imagined such impacts and how much they have understood of the shown data.

Main Aim

  • Raise awareness about the essential resources nature provides us
  • Improve the knowledge of Ecosystem services and their value.

Tips For The Trainer

  • Use a Chronometer to check the time of the activity. Each step should have a fixed time, otherwise participants loose the focus
  • This is not a competitive activity, it uses competition only to motivate participants. The focus is on the learning process.
  • The PPT has to be clear and catching. An overview of the 4 ecosystem services and their importance is enough.

Materials and preparation

  • Tables and chairs
  • Papers and pens
  • Research papers in English
The trainer should research and print 12 research papers on the impact of nature in human well-being in advance.

Main Aim

  • Understanding the impact of biodiversity loss in our economy and health
  • Boost critical thinking
  • Intercultural dialogue
