Session Description

  • Ice-breaking & Introduction
Active listening activity Part A) Introduce your neighbor: Ask participants to pair in 2, and to introduce themselves one to another. 1 min each. Then get back all together. Now ask each couple to introduce the other person from their pair to the group. Part B) Animal Talk: Ask participants to ask the person sitting next to them “With which animal would you like to have a chat, and why? What would you ask that animal?” Change pairs, with enough time and repeat. These activities encourage active listening and can reveal surprising insights about colleagues.
  • Introduction (presentation) of key topics around EU and global policies on biodiversity (use presentation available online).
  • Speed Dating: 2 min of “What do you remember about biodiversity?”
Ask participants to get together with another person. Each round of speed dating will last 2 min, there will be 5 rounds (if the group is >10 ; if smaller group, do less rounds). Each participant has 1 min to share information or learnings from the presentation with the other person. After 1 min the pairs change roles, one now talking, the other listening. Every 2 minutes call out ‘CHANGE’, and participants need to form new pairs, for a new round of speed dating.
  • Reflective Dialogue (45 mins) Collect keywords and topics together with the participants on a whiteboard or flipchart.

Session Description

3. Main activity: participatory research in 3 groups (30 min) Group 1: earlier policies until 2020. To understand achievements and failures Group 2: Key Global Targets from Kunming-Montreal Biodiversity Framework (COP15) Group 3: EU Biodiversity Strategy 2030 Each group should then present their results (10 min each). Simulation & role play Participants will take the role of global representatives debating the challenges and new admissions or actions that need to be taken. Based on the results from each group collected (targets, achievements, failures, challenges), participants should discuss in the role of policymakers their arguments for and against biodiversity conservation efforts. Ask them to form smaller groups (4 or 6 participants per group). Each group will then split, one half arguing pro, the other half arguing against biodiversity efforts (resources needed, case studies, urgency, public support etc.) 4. Conclusion Collect key arguments (pro and con) together with the participants on a whiteboard or flipchart. Number of participants: <16
