Transitioning to a new foreign policy

  • The end of the Cold War was marked by the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, bringing an end to the ideological and strategic competition between the two superpowers.

DEEPENING TIES WITH THE SOVIET UNION AND THE 1971

India's involvement in the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War and Bangladesh Liberation resulted in the formation of Bangladesh. India played a crucial role in the Bengali independence movement by providing military assistance, despite Pakistan's position, leading to its eventual success.

EARLY YEARS OF INDEPENDENCE

India gained independence from Britain after 300 years just as the Cold War started between, capitalism and communism or the US and Soviet Union at the same time India created its non-alignment policy under prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru

Continuing conflicts and expansion

While India stuck to non-alignment, it started expanding its diplomatic and military relations to include more than just the Soviet Union. India stayed careful in its dealings with the superpowers of the Cold War, managing its connections with both the U.S. and the USSR, as well as nurturing strong bonds with other developing nations and the NAM.

Transitioning to a new foreign policy was necessary after the Cold War ended in the 1990s

The end of the Cold War also marked the end of the Soviet Union in 1991, that brought the end to the ideological and strategic competition between both Post-Cold War Change: After the Cold War ended, India experienced big changes in its foreign relations and economic strategies.Because India's non-alignment policy was reassessed it caused a closer relationship with the US, India had to adapt its foreign policy after the Soviet Union's fell, creating stronger and important connections with many countries including the US. Economic reforms in 1991, led by Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao and Finance Minister Manmohan Singh, signaled India's movement towards a more open market economy. This allowed India to become more connected with the global economy, leading to forming new economic alliances.
