  • 1:00 — One o’clock
  • 2:00 — Two o’clock

When you are telling only the hour, you use o'clock. Remember: If you need to include minutes, then you cannot say o’clock.

  • It is half past six. ( 06:30 )
  • It is half past one.( 01:30 )

When you are telling the hour and thirty, you use the hour and thirty or you can use a half past and the hour. Remember: ‘Half past’ expression is used when clock shows half hours and it is formal.

  • It is (a) quarter past nine. ( 9:15 )
  • It is (a) quarter to five. ( 04:45 )
  • It is (a) quarter past eight. ( 08:15 )

When you are telling the hour and fifteen or forty-five, you can use a quarter (past or to). Remember: ‘a quarter to’ and ‘a quarter past’ expressions are used when clock shows quarter hours.

  • It is twenty past eight. ( 08:20 )
  • It is twenty-five to seven. ( 06:35 )
  • We use PAST for: ( 5,10,15,20,25 )

Remember the form: It is (minutes) past / to (hours).

For multiplies of 5, we leave out the word ‘minutes’

At Other Hours minutes: ( Past / To)

Examples

  • It is 4 minutes to eight. ( 07:56 )
      • ( less formal: It is seven fifty-six )
  • It is seven minutes past eleven. ( 11: 07 )
      • ( less formal: It is eleven O-seven )
      • (0 is pronounced like the letter”O” not “zero.”)
  • It is nine minutes to three. ( 2:51)
      • (less formal: It is fifty-one)
  • We use PAST for ( 01 minute to 30 minutes )
  • We use TO for ( 31 to 59 minutes )
Remember the form: It is …….. minutes past / to ……..

  • For the hours after noon ( 12:01 -24:00 ), we use p.m. (Post meridiem)

  • For the hours before noon ( 00:01 – 12:00), we use a.m. (Ante meridiem)
  • Example:
      • 02:00 am = It is two o’clock before noon

When it is daytime in one place, it can be night in another place. Example of Time Zones: In New York, the time is 8 AM. In London, the time is 1 PM. In Tokyo, the time is 10 PM. When you travel, you change time zones. This can be confusing. For example, if you fly from New York to London, you need to change your watch. You arrive in London in the afternoon, but it is still morning in New York. Why Are There Time Zones? The Earth rotates. This means different parts of the world see the sun at different times. To make life easier, we use time zones.
