WElcome to the root'n toot'n american west

Welcome to your study of the American West—an era that profoundly shaped the history, culture, and landscape of the United States. In this class, we will delve into the fascinating and complex period of the 19th century, when waves of settlers moved westward across the continent. This movement was driven by the powerful and often controversial belief in Manifest Destiny, the idea that Americans were destined to expand across North America.

Learning goal

Learners will explore why pioneers moved west, what they experienced, and the effects of Manifest Destiny. By looking at key events, important people, and government policies, students will better understand how westward expansion shaped the United States and how it impacted different groups, including Native American tribes, settlers, and immigrants.

The american west

This unit will introduce the history of the American West in the 19th century. We'll focus on a few major themes to help you understand the American West and, most importantly, its significance in the larger story of American history. While we can't cover everything—trying to do so would be like pouring a gallon of water into a pint jar—we'll dive into some of the most important and impactful big ideas.

One big idea…What is the West? What are your visions of the West? What images come to mind when you think of the West?

Create an American West diorama

  • Create a three-dimensional diorama depicting a specific event, location, theme from the American West.
  • Use various material [some material(s) provided].
  • Label each significant component

explorers

A look at Lewis & Clarks Expeditions and other Explorers

Welcome to your exploration of one of the most iconic journeys in American history—the Lewis and Clark Expedition—and its role in the expansion of the American West. As we dive into this unit, you'll discover the daring adventures, scientific discoveries, and significant impacts of this expedition, which marked a turning point in America's westward expansion.

empires

Why do we study other Empires when talking about the American West?:

  • Studying the empires that occupied and were established in the American West during the period of westward expansion is crucial for several reasons. This includes understanding the roles of both European colonial powers and indigenous empires like the Comanche and Lakota. Here's why these diverse empires are equally important:
  • The history of the American West is not solely the story of European colonization. Indigenous empires like the Comanche and Lakota had complex societies, economies, and political structures that significantly influenced the region. By studying these indigenous empires, we gain a more comprehensive understanding of the historical landscape, recognizing the diversity of cultures and governance systems that existed before and during European expansion.
